General Mission
The Byron Forest Preserve District's 708 acres include 140 acres in an Illinois Nature Preserve. It has one of Illinois' finest prairies, oak savannahs, and prairie restoration. The nature center has a museum that depicts the Illinois that once was, with stuffed mammals and live snakes and fish. There are hiking and cross-country ski trails, an observatory, gift shop, banquet/meeting facilities for up to 200 people, and a golf course with an Audubon Sanctuary program that aims to increase wildlife habitat on the edges of the course. Major activities include environmental education programs for school children.
