RESEARCH/PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES
***********************************
1. EDUCATION IN INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY

The Journal of Industrial Ecology (JIE) is now in the midst of publishing a
special series on Education in Industrial Ecology. The last three issues
are a part of this series, as will be future issues. The Journal invites
submissions on this topic.
For details on how to make a submission or to read abstracts from past
articles visit JIE's web sites at:

JIE home page: http://mitpress.mit.edu/journal-home.tcl?issn=10881980
Call for papers and related information about EE and industrial ecology:

2. CLIMATE CHANGE: WHAT ARE EDUCATORS TO DO ABOUT IMPORTANT GLOBAL ISSUES?

Call for Papers for Volume 6, Spring 2001 of The Canadian Journal of
Environmental Education (CJEE). CJEE is including a selection of articles on
the topic of climate change in Volumes 5 & 6. Volume 5 is now available, and
Volume 6 is planned for the spring of 2001. Submission guidelines and an
examination of the complex nature of the topic of global warming are
available on the CJEE web site.

The Canadian Journal of Environmental Education is a refereed journal
published once a year. Submissions accepted between September 1 and November
15, 2000.

GRANTS

3. National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) AWARDS AND COMPETITIONS

NSTA and its sponsors reward teachers and students with over $1 million in
cash and prizes each year. The NSTA awards web site outlines opportunities
to receive personal and school recognition. Program applications are
available online in PDF format.

4. ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FELLOWSHIP

The Environmental Leadership Program's (ELP) Fellowship program is a highly
experiential and innovative national initiative that aims to build the
leadership capacity of the environmental movement's most promising emerging
professionals. Each year, a new class of twenty to thirty fellows is chosen
to receive intensive training, institutional support, and mentoring for a
three-year period. Fellows receive national recognition through the program
and gain access to funding to pursue further skill training and develop new
projects. Applicants for the fellowship must commit to participating in four
retreats -- two the first year and one in each subsequent year. ELP will
provide each fellow with a modest participation stipend and will pay all
travel costs to and from the retreats. While the fellowship requires regular
participation throughout the year, fellows are expected to continue in their
full-time jobs or studies. Applications are available online. Deadline:
October 2, 2000.

5. TOUCH SCIENCE: HANDS-ON LEARNING FOR KIDS AND COMMUNITIES

The Touch Science program aims to meet the need for more interactive
scientific learning for children. The Texaco Foundation is interested in
funding scientific exploration and discovery programs for school children
(K-2) through educational partnerships with science museums, aquaria,
horticultural societies, and related institutions as well as school-based
interdisciplinary and active environmental learning programs. The foundation
generally solicits proposals from organizations for this program,
particularly those located in key Texaco locations. Although unsolicited
proposals will be accepted, a favorable decision is less likely. There is no
specified deadline for proposals.

UPDATES FROM THE HILL

6. THE NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ACT (H.R. 4745) - REAUTHORIZATION
UPDATE

The House Education and Workforce Committee is reviewing comments that were
submitted during the 14 -day open comment period that followed the June 27th
hearing on the reauthorization of the Environmental Education Act (H.R.
4745). The EPA's Office of Environmental Education has responded to
Congressman Schaeffers's (R-CO) comments during the hearing, which
questioned the role of EPA as a regulatory agency to impartially manage the
Office of Environmental Education.

At this time H.R. 4745 has 15 cosponsors. With Congress in recess for the
month of August, there is only a short time remaining in which the EE Act
can move to mark-up and a full House floor vote. The current expectation is
that the House Education and Workforce Committee will mark the bill up
during the first week of September. H.R. 4745 will then be referred
sequentially to the Commerce Committee and then will be on its way to a full
house floor vote. The Senate passed the EE Act in the early spring
