1. CALIFORNIA JOURNAL OF SCIENCE EDUCATION - CALL FOR PAPERS
The California Science Teachers Association's (CSTA) semi-annual scholarly
journal focuses on one or more critical issues in science education to give
readers a full spectrum of though-provoking and insightful information about
the topic. The inaugural issue of the journal, "Controversy in the
Classroom, I: The Environment," has just been released.
Articles for the spring issue, which will focus on evolution, should be
received in the CSTA office no later than November 30. For more information

2. ASSOCIATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL & OUTDOOR EDUCATION 2001 CONFERENCE -
CORRECTION
April 27-29, 2001, Sonoma County, California
The theme of the conference is "Bringing It All Back Home: Lifelong
Environmental and Place-Based Education." Please note that presenters will
receive a 25% discount on conference registration fees per session offered,
and an additional 5% if applications are received by January 12, 2001. The
final application deadline is April 6, 2001.

3. LORRIE OTTO SEEDS FOR EDUCATION FUND
The Lorrie Otto Seeds for Education Fund of the Milwaukee Foundation gives
small monetary grants to schools, nature centers, or other educational
organizations for child-centered projects that create native plant
landscapes or develop outdoor classrooms. Application Deadline: November
15.

4. NATIONAL WILDLIFE FEDERATION - CAMPUS FELLOWS
The National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Fellowships encourage and
support students in their efforts to create sustainable campus communities.
Fellowships provide an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students
to collaborate with faculty and staff to implement campus greening projects.
They also provide an opportunity for students to enhance their campus
communities, while gaining applicable experience in the environmental field.
Fellows receive project support, modest financial compensation, and
recognition of their accomplishments. Application Deadline: November 15.

5. TARGET SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS
Target awards scholarships each year to well-rounded high school seniors and
college students (under age 24) who are committed to community service and
education. A total of $1 million each year is also awarded to teachers and
administrators for continuing education and staff development. Application

6. INTERIOR DEPARTMENT FY2001 APPROPRIATIONS BILL (P.L. 106-291)
On October 11th, President Clinton signed into Law the Interior Department
Appropriations bill (P.L. 106-291). The bill includes the allocation of
$686 million for the acquisition, conservation, and maintenance of Federal
and non-Federal lands and resources, and authorizes additional spending that
could total $12 billion over the next five years. This bill replaces the
Conservation and Reinvestment Act of 2000 (CARA). Final Congressional Votes:
Senate 83 to 13; House 348 to 69.

8. AFFILIATE HIGHLIGHT - ASSOCIATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION, RUSSIA /
COMMONWEALTH OF INDEPENDENT STATES
The Association for Environmental Education, Russia / Commonwealth of
Independent States (ASEKO) has been a member of NAAEE's International
Association since August 1999. ASEKO issues a bi-weekly e-mail bulletin (in
Russian) to 1500 subscribers with sections on EE resources, current events

10. ERIC DIGESTS - NEW RESOURCES
The ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) Digest database features
full-text short reports aimed at education professionals and the broader
education community. Each report
provides an overview of an education topic of current interest and offers
references for further information. Sample titles include "Critical
Behaviors and Strategies for Teaching Culturally Diverse Students,"
"Reflective Thought, Critical Thinking," and "Effective Teaching in Distance
