RESEARCH/PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES

1. THE JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL PSYCHOLOGY - CALL FOR PAPERS

JEP plans a special issue on children and their environment.  People working
in this broad field are invited to contact the editors with proposals for
articles, reviews and research reports. Topics might include: Children's
wayfinding and cognitive maps, Design of environments for children and
Cross-cultural studies of children's environmental cognition.  From these
initial expressions of interest, the editors hope to build an issue which
reflects something of the range of current activity.  Author's should also
be aware of JEP's willingness to include good quality black and white
photographs and other relevant illustrations.

2. INTERSYMP 2001 - CALL FOR PAPERS
July 30th-August 4th, 2001, Baden-Baden, Germany

A special symposium in honor and memory of Robbin Hough will be held at the
13th International Conference on Systems Research, Informatics and
Cybernetics.  Anyone wishing to present a paper on Communications will need
to submit two copies of an abstract (up to 200 words) as soon as possible,

3. HOME DEPOT - ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS

Home Depot awards grants to support the work of nonprofit organizations in
furthering environmental research and education. Focus areas are:
sustainable and green building practices; forestry and ecology; clean-up and
recycling; lead poisoning prevention; and consumer education. Application
Deadline: December 15.

4. THE CONSERVATION TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT PROGRAM

The Conservation Technology Support Program (CTSP) annually awards grants of
equipment plus software and training to 501c3 tax-exempt conservation
organizations to build their Geographic Information Systems (GIS) capacity.
Approximately 50 grant packages are available, using computers and printers
donated by Hewlett Packard Company, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
software by Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.(ESRI) and Clark
Labs.  Application Deadline: January 9, 2001.  Applications can be accessed

5. NATIONAL TEACHERS HALL OF FAME - NOMINATIONS

The mission of the National Teachers Hall of Fame is to recognize exemplary
pre-K-12 teachers and to share their expertise and accomplishments as
stellar examples of the teaching profession. One of the most important
components of the NTHF is the annual Teacher Recognition Program, which
selects five teachers for induction every year. The 2001 inductees will be
recognized in Emporia, Kansas (June 21-24, 2001), and in Washington, D.C.
(November 2001) in conjunction with American Education Week.  Nominations

6. NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ADVISORY COUNCIL'S DRAFT REPORT TO
CONGRESS 2001

The Report outlines several recommendations for national strategic
initiatives in environmental education.  It will be presented to Congress as
soon as possible after it reconvenes in 2001.  The National EE Advisory
Council needs input from the nation's EE community to finalize the report.
Make your voice heard in Congress about the future direction and priority
needs for environmental education - your suggestions and comments count!

Here's what you can do:
1) Review the draft report on EPA's website.  The public comment period will
be open until December 31.
2) Send your comments (in writing, only) to: Ginger Keho, Office of

Through the IBM PC Recycling Service, consumers and small businesses can
recycle any manufacturer's PCs, including system units, monitors, printers
and optional attachments for $29.99, which includes shipping. IBM PC
Recycling Service will either recycle the equipment or refurbish the system
and arrange for its donation to Gifts in Kind International.

9. NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE, POLICY, AND THE ENVIRONMENT
December 7-8, National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C.

The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) is bringing
together individuals from key communities to identify new and existing
approaches to help shape the "science for the environment" agenda of the
next Administration and Congress. Conference highlights include the first
annual John H. Chafee Memorial lecture on Science and the Environment, and a
representative from the new National Science Foundation Advisory Council on
Environmental Research and Education will chair the session entitled "Moving
Forward at the National Science Foundation."

10. A GREENPRINT FOR MINNESOTA, SECOND EDITION

The GreenPrint is designed to foster and expand partnerships to produce and
provide EE programs and materials to Minnesota citizens. Implementation of
the GreenPrint will increase environmental literacy and provide Minnesotans
with the knowledge and skills to become active and engaged citizens to help
keep our communities healthy and vital.

11. EDUCATION, INFORMATION, AND VOLUNTARY MEASURES IN ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION
November 29-30, National Research Council, Washington, D.C.

A workshop sponsored by the Committee on Human Dimensions of Global Change
to consider the potential for using education, information, and voluntary
programs to advance environmental protection goals. Participants will
present papers reviewing and assessing experience with such measures and
programs in environmental and related areas (e.g., health, safety) and will
consider strategies aimed at individuals, households, communities, and small
to medium-sized firms. The best papers will be collected into a volume. This
project is supported by the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of

12. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING PARTNERSHIP (EETAP) WEB SITE

A newly revised Web site launched last month by EETAP describes the benefits
of environmental education as well as the services and products available
through EETAP's member organizations.  The Web site's content and design
were revised in order to help visitors understand the Partnership and its
work.

Full-color brochures on five of EETAP's core themes (Developing Stronger
Leaders and Organizations; Improving Student Learning; Promoting Diversity;
Promoting Quality; and Improving Access Through Technology) are available at
no cost. The brochures are directed at teachers and other education
professionals, and offer information about state-of-the-art resources. For
