RESEARCH/PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES

1. CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE: THEIR ENVIRONMENTS CONFERENCE - CALL FOR PAPERS
June 28-30, 2001, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand

The focus of this Children's Issues Centre conference will be on the
influence of children's physical environments on their safety and well
being. Social, political and economic environments will also be included,
but the focus of the conference will be on natural and outdoor environments,
public space, neighborhood and community contexts, opportunities for play
and recreation, and planning. The emphasis is on facilitating interactions
between practitioners, policy makers and researchers concerned about
children and young people. Children and young people will also participate
in the conference.

2. EPA'S NATIONAL NETWORK FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT STUDIES (NNEMS)

The NNEMS fellowship program was established in 1986 to encourage college
students to pursue environmental careers. The program provides students with
environmental research or training experience linked directly to their field
of undergraduate or graduate study. EPA's Office of Environmental Education
is offering NNEMS fellowships to graduate students to conduct research in
one of the following three areas relating to: (1) The relationship between
EE and environmental protection goals; (2) The relationship between EE and
student performance; Or, (3) the effectiveness of educator preparation in EE
(preservice, in-service, or non-formal). Application deadline: January 31,
2001.

3. INSPIRED TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP FOR VISUAL LEARNING

Twenty scholarships of $500 each will be awarded to qualified candidates by
Inspiration Software Inc. to defray the costs associated with attendance at
a workshop, conference, or graduate course that focuses on visual learning
and technology in education. Candidates must be educators in a K-12 public
or private school. A minimum of one year of service is required.

4. PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE TEACHING

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
(PAEMST) Program was established in 1983 by The White House and is sponsored
by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The program identifies outstanding
science and mathematics teachers, kindergarten through 12th grade, in each
state and the four U.S. jurisdictions. These teachers will serve as models
for their colleagues and will be leaders in the improvement of science and
mathematics education.
Applications are encouraged from teachers from all locations (urban,
suburban, small town, rural) and all underrepresented minority groups
(American Indians, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Alaskans, Native
Pacific Islanders).  Application Deadline: February 12, 2001.  For more

5. 106TH CONGRESS ADJOURNS

Congress approved a $450 billion spending package on December 15th -- the
final four appropriations bills to fund the federal government through
fiscal year 2001.  The bills approve spending increases for hiring teachers,
repairing schools, Pell grants for low-income college students and allow the
National Marine Fisheries Service to implement a management plan for
commercial fishing to protect the Steller sea lion's critical Aleutian
habitat.

The 107th Congress is scheduled to convene on January 6, 2001.

6. EDUCATION, INFORMATION, AND VOLUNTARY MEASURES IN ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION WORKSHOP PAPERS

Papers presented at the Workshop on Education, Information and Voluntary
Measures in Environmental Protection on November 29th and 30th are available
on the web in PDF at:

The papers include treatments of residential energy conservation, green
labeling, recycling, analogies from health promotion and disaster
preparedness, and voluntary measures on the part of firms, local governments
and other local organizations and well as classroom and adult education.

The workshop was sponsored by the U.S. National Research Council Committee
on Human Dimensions of Global Change with the support of the Office of
Environmental Education at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.


7. OUR URBAN ENVIRONMENT - VIDEO SERIES

The two video series focus on water quality and solid waste disposal issues
in urban communities. Specific topics include wastewater collection and
treatment, industrial discharge, storm water management, recycling,
composting and waste minimization. Produced the University of New Orleans'

8. SOLAR ECLIPSE
Monday, December 25th

A partial solar eclipse will be visible from the entire continental U.S. on
Christmas Day, December 25th.  The eclipse will peak in the early morning on
the west coast, with 14 percent of the sun covered in Los Angeles and over
35 percent covered in Seattle at between 8:30 and 9 a.m. At about 11 a.m.,
the sun will reach Dallas, with 35 percent of the sun covered. Over 50
percent of the sun will be covered in the early afternoon in Boston, New
York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Washington, D.C.
Though the sun will be partly covered, it is still not safe to look at
directly. A pinhole camera is the safest way to observe the partial eclipse.
The next Christmas solar eclipse will not occur until 2307.

9. LEARNING IN DEED

Learning in Deed is an initiative which aims to make service learning - a
teaching strategy that integrates service to others with classroom
instruction - part of every K-12 student's experience.  The results of a
recent Roper Starch Worldwide survey that demonstrate strong public support
for Service Learning can be accessed from the Learning in Deed web site,
along with resources for teachers, students, researchers and policy makers
