1. NAAEE NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2001 - CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
October 11-15, Little Rock, Arkansas

NAAEE's 30th annual conference, "2001: An EE Odyssey - Exploring Capacity,
Community, Complexity and Culture," provides a framework upon which those
committed to sound principles regarding education about the environment can
discover our rich environmental education (EE) heritage, the many current EE
successes, and exhilarating journeys ahead. Proposals for Conference
presentations, symposia, seminars, workshops, interacts, and research poster
sessions are being accepted until February 15th.

3. EPA'S NATIONAL NETWORK FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT STUDIES (NNEMS) --
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 16th

EPA's Office of Environmental Education is offering NNEMS fellowships to
graduate students in two areas as follows.

Research: Conduct research at the student's academic institution in one of
the following three areas relating to: (1) the relationship between EE and
environmental protection goals; (2) the relationship between EE and student
performance; or, (3) the effectiveness of educator preparation in EE
(pre-service, in-service, or non-formal).  For more information on the
research fellowships, see page 44 of the NNEMS Program Catalog or contact

EPA's EE Programs:  Work at EPA Headquarters in Washington, DC to collect
information on the EE needs of EPA's program offices and assist in providing
technical assistance in meeting these needs. Includes developing an on-line
searchable database of EPA's non-regulatory, voluntary, and education

4. ENVISION: A REGIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE INSTITUTE FOR TEACHERS
Spring Pre-Institute April 26-28. Summer Institute July 9 - 31.

ENVISION is an environmental science institute to prepare middle school
leadership teams that are knowledgeable of: environmental concepts and
issues; inquiry skills for investigating environmental issues; appropriate
curricular, pedagogical, and assessment practices for teaching science
within studies of local environmental issues; and ways to develop
educational partnerships with local government, industry, and business.
Each leadership team utilizes the NRC Standards and Benchmarks as tools for
developing a standards-based environmental science program.  The project
targets middle school leadership teams composed of four science teachers
from within a school district. ENVISION provides a $1200 summer stipend, 6
hours of free graduate credit, and covers travel, lodging, and meals for
Level I participants.  For Level II participants, ENVISION provides 2 hours
of free graduate credit. Funded by the National Science Foundation.

5. PRESIDENT CLINTON'S LAST DAYS

In his last month in office President Clinton established 8 new National
Monuments and
protected 58.5 million acres of roadless National forestland in 39 states.

6. OKLAHOMA ASSOCIATION FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
February 8, Oklahoma State University, Tulsa

Oklahoma's Environmental Education Expo 2001, "Toward A Sustainable
Future--From Awareness to Knowledge to Action," will feature Dr. Mathis
Wackernagel, noted sustainability proponent.  Conference goals include
educating and involving Oklahomans from all walks of life in techniques for
building sustainable businesses, communities and lives; motivating them to
work toward a more sustainable future, using ideas and techniques covered in
the sessions; and providing networking opportunities to promote
sustainability partnerships, projects and educational activities in the
topic areas covered by sessions.  Follow-up workshops will be organized on
topics of interest.

7. THE NATIONAL ARBOR DAY FOUNDATION - NATIONAL TREE VOTE

The National Arbor Day Foundation was founded in 1972 to help people plant
and care for trees. Today the Foundation has grown into a national
membership organization that distributed 8 million trees to its members last
year alone. The Foundation is hosting a special Internet vote for America's
National Tree through midnight on April 26th. Information about the trees
being voted on and related pictures are available on the National Arbor Day

8. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE
March 4-9, London, England
This seminar, hosted by the British Council, has three interrelated themes:
Planning, Implementation and Evaluation. Each theme will be illuminated by
research findings and illustrated through case studies and practical
experience. The seminar is an intensive series of keynote lectures, short
presentations, poster paper sessions, workshops and discussions.
Participants will experience a range of formal and informal environmental
education experiences. The seminar is designed for people involved in the
planning, implementation and evaluation of environmental education at
primary and secondary levels including curriculum developers, inspectors,
teacher trainers and senior educationalists.

9. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION RESEARCH

Environmental Education Research is an international refereed journal which
publishes papers and reports on all aspects of environmental education. The
purpose of the journal is to help advance understanding of environmental
education through a focus on papers reporting research and development
activities. The journal also carries more diverse papers including,
conference reviews, commentaries on policy issues, comparative aspects of an
environmental education issue and critical reviews of environmental
education provision in a particular country or region. The criteria for
acceptance of papers are that they are analytical and critical; that the
ideas being discussed are transferable to other educational systems and
cultures; and that they are accessible to an international audience.

10. THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE - EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

The National Park staff has developed age appropriate educational worksheets
on biology, geology, and history, which they are distributing for free along
with classroom sets of appropriate Park brochures.  Please contact Annette

of students in your class, and the area of study that you are emphasizing,
to obtain these resources.
