6. SENATE CONFIRMATIONS

The Senate confirmed former Colorado Attorney General Gale Norton as
Secretary of the Interior (75-24) and New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman
as the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (99-0). Many
environmental groups lobbied intensely against Norton during the
confirmation hearings, fearing that as Interior Secretary she will place oil
exploration and development ahead of protection of the nation's public
lands.
