RESEARCH/PUBLISHING OPPORTUNITIES

1. NAAEE NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2001 - CALL FOR REVIEWERS
October 11-15, Little Rock, Arkansas

NAAEE needs reviewers for Presentation, Symposium, Workshop, Research
Poster, Hands On and Interact session proposals.  Each proposal submitted
for the conference program will be reviewed by at least three individuals
with environmental education experience as a part of a blind review process.
Final conference presentations are selected based on the reviewers' scores.
Each reviewer should have no more 15 presentations to review and will
receive scoring instructions, a scoring sheet to facilitate the review
process, and copies of the Proposals by March 1st.  Faxable score sheets are
due by March 15th.

2. NATIONAL MARINE EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION - CALL FOR PAPERS
July 17-21, University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

The theme of the National Marine Educators Association's (NMEA) conference
is "NMEA 2001: A Water Odyssey - Understanding Our Sense of Place."  The
conference will look at the relationship of humans with water through time
and history, traditions and cultures, art and music and sound science. NMEA
is a national association composed of marine and aquatic educators from
universities, K-12 classrooms, public and private aquariums, non-profit
learning centers, and public agencies.  The deadline for proposal
submissions is March 1st.

3. SPIRIT OF THE LAND AWARDS - WEB SITE CORRECTION

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter
Games of 2002 (SLOC) is calling for applications for the Spirit of the Land
Awards. The awards will recognize quality environmental education programs
on every level from grassroots to global. This year's competition is open to
any local, national or international environmental program that contains an
educational element. Special consideration will be given to programs
addressing issues on SLOC's environmental platform, notably programs
targeted at urban forestry and air pollution mitigation.

4. STORIES IN THE LAND TEACHING FELLOWSHIPS

The Orion Society is offering Stories in the Land teaching fellowships to
encourage teachers to study local landscape and history, read regional
literature, and encourage creative student responses to their home
communities.  Open to K-12 teachers in Canada and the U.S.  Application
Deadline is June 1st.

5. MELINDA GRAY ARDIA ENVIRONMENTAL FOUNDATION GRANTS

K-12 teachers worldwide are invited to apply for grants of $1000 to develop
or implement environmental curricula that integrates hands-on ecology
exercises into the classroom.  Curricula that encourage the integration of
multiple disciplines (such as integrating art and science), and which
include cooperative work with multiple school districts will be given
special consideration.  Application Deadline: April 6th.

6. NATIONAL FOREST ROADLESS AREA CONSERVATION RULE

Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman has delayed the effective date of the
Roadless Area Conservation rule, signed by President Clinton two weeks
before he left office, until May 12, 2001.  This action was in accordance
with President Bush's order that all new and pending regulations, including
11th hour environmental protection initiatives passed by former President
Clinton, be reviewed or delayed, which could hinder their final approval.

7. PRESIDENT BUSH'S EDUCATION INITIATIVE: "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND"

The US Department of Education has placed online a report outlining
President Bush's new educational policy and recommendations to Congress. The
report sketches Bush's goals for education reform: testing to assess student
performance and the success of individual schools, less federal regulatory
involvement in school policymaking, targeted spending to "improve schools
and enhance teacher quality, "a focus on literacy, and a system of choice
for parents whose children
are in failing schools. The 28-page report provides a general summary of the
policy initiatives designed to realize these goals (an executive summary is
also available).

8. NATIONAL SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION - 2001 NATIONAL CONVENTION
March 22-25, St. Louis, Missouri

NSTA's national convention is designed to respond to the changing
professional development needs of science educators, especially as they
relate to standards.  More information about the conference and online

9. INTERNATIONAL LETTER EXCHANGE
Bosteri village, Issik-Kul oblast, Kyrgyz Republic (Central Asia)

Hugh Ho, U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, is interested in starting a letter
exchange between the students (grades 5-11) of the ecological lyceum that he
teaches at in the Kyrgyz Republic and a school in the U.S.  The focus of the
letter exchange would be on the respective cultures of the students and
their cultures' relationships with the environment. The courses at the
lyceum are similar to most in the U.S., but with an emphasis on the
sciences, and include special after school courses in ecology.

10. RURAL YOUTH & ENVIRONMENT CONFERENCE
April 28-29, Flagstaff, Arizona

The Coconino Rural Environment Corps will be hosting a Rural Youth &
Environment Conference in Flagstaff, Arizona. This outdoor conference, held
in a ponderosa pine forest, is part of the annual Grand Canyon Forests
Festival.  The conference targets rural youth in Jr. and Sr. High School and
will focus on rural youth development and environmental education.  There
will be several youth tracks, an adult track, a youth worker track, and a
conservation corps track, and will include overnight camping accommodations.

11. TEACHING *OUTSIDE* THE BOX WORKSHOP
May 4-6, Winter Park, Colorado

"Teaching Outside the Box" is a weekend workshop sponsored by the Colorado
Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE).  The workshop is designed to
help educators make discoveries about the natural world and learn and share
teaching techniques, resources and ideas for educating others about nature
and the environment.  Early registration ends March 15th.

12. EPA'S DRAFT PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT POLICY

This Policy will provide guidance and direction to EPA officials on
effective means to involve the public in its regulatory and program
decisions. The Draft Policy was developed based on recommendations in the
"Engaging the American People: A Review of EPA's Public Participation Policy
and Regulations with Recommendations for Action" report.  The EPA will be
accepting comments until April 27th. Submit comments to
