5. ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE (ANWR)

On February 26th, Senator Murkowski (R-AK) introduced the National Energy
Security Act of 2001 (S. 388) that, if passed, would open up approximately
1,549,000 acres of the coastal plain of ANWR to "oil and gas exploration,
development, and production activities" (Title V--Arctic Coastal Plain
Domestic Energy Security Act of 2001). This bill has 13 Cosponsors.

In response to Senator Murkowski's Energy Bill, Senator Lieberman (D-CT)
introduced "A bill to designate a portion of the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge as wilderness" (S. 411) on February 28th, and Representative Markey
(D-MA), introduced the Morris K. Udall Arctic Wilderness Act of 2001 (H.R.
770) on March 1st. The Morris K. Udall Arctic Wilderness Act aims to
"preserve the Arctic coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge,
Alaska, as wilderness in recognition of its extraordinary natural ecosystems
and for the permanent good of present and future generations of Americans."
S.411 has 24 Cosponsors and H.R 770 has 126 Cosponsors.

8. CONSERVATION PSYCHOLOGY WEB SITE

The term "Conservation Psychology" indicates not a discipline, but the focus
of the various fields of psychology and allied disciplines on urgent
questions of environmental conservation. The intent of this web site is to
assist more psychologists to come together to use their training, tools and
perspectives to contribute to 'greening' psychology, and to making society
more ecologically sustainable. Conservation Psychology connects with
applications in environmental policy, communication, education, human
dimensions, and other fields. Paper abstracts, subscription information for
the Conservation Psychology listserv, and a record of discussion forums
from the sessions on "Caring For and About Nature: Toward a field of
Conservation Psychology?" at the International Symposium on Society and
Natural Resources (2000) can be accessed from the CP site.
