1. CANADIAN JOURNAL OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION - CALL FOR PAPERS

The Canadian Journal of Environmental Education is including a broad selection of articles on the

that it is important for people to speak in their own voices, about their own issues, in their own
way.
Submissions will be accepted between September 1st and November 15th. Guidelines for contributors
may be found at:
http://www.edu.uleth.ca/ictrd/cjee/guidelines.html
or email the editors at cjee@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx; or write to Bob Jickling, Editor, Canadian Journal
of Environmental Education, Yukon College, Box 2799, Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada Y1A 5K4

13. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY INDEX (ESI)

The Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) is a measure of overall progress towards environmental
sustainability for 122 countries. The ESI is based on 22 core "indicators," which combine two to six
variables for a total of 67 underlying variables. The idea is to create cross-national comparisons
of environmental progress as part of an effort to foster a more analytically driven approach to
environmental decision-making. The full text of the 225-page report and a PowerPoint Presentation
can be downloaded from the ESI site. The ESI is the result of collaboration among the World Economic
Forum's Global Leaders for Tomorrow Environment Task Force, The Yale Center for Environmental Law
and Policy, and the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network
(CIESIN).

14. ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING PARTNERSHIP (EETAP) CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS OF PROGRESS

A new publication released this week highlights the accomplishments of the first five years of the
EETAP in advancing education and environmental literacy. The engaging twenty-five page,
user-friendly booklet -- "EETAP Celebrates Fives Years of Advancing Education and Environmental
Literacy"-- summarizes the major activities and impacts made by 18 organizations that collaborated
to enhance training and resources available to educational professionals across the United States.
The North American Association for Environmental Education served as the lead organization for EETAP
from 1995-2000.

The report also focuses attention on the challenges that remain in supporting educators and
institutions in the implementation of quality EE programs, and are being addressed in the second
phase of EETAP led by the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point's College of Natural Resources.
These challenges include expanding professional development in EE, especially to diverse
communities; implementing comprehensive state and local EE programs; and serving the education
reform agenda.

Copies of EETAP Celebrates can be obtained from EETAP's web-site: http://www.eetap.org/ or by
contacting Bob Holsman, EETAP Communication Director, at (715) 346-4957 or rholsman@xxxxxxxx
