6. NATIONAL FOREST ROADLESS AREA CONSERVATION RULE - UPDATE

On May 4th the Bush Administration announced that it would allow the
National Forest Roadless Area Conservation Rule to go forward, but that it
would propose new amendments to the rule in June. Agriculture Secretary Ann
M. Veneman said that the changes will ensure local input on individual
forest decisions. Since this announcement, Idaho Federal District Judge
Edward Lodge issued a preliminary injunction on May 10th stopping the Forest
Service from enforcing the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, an action that
has been appealed by leading environmental groups.

The U.S. Forest Service held more than 600 hearings nationwide and received
more than 1.6 million comments from the American people on the Roadless
Rule. Under the directive of the policy, 58 million acres of our National
Forests last remaining wildlands would be protected from road building, most
forms of logging and any new mining and drilling.
