1. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY - CALL FOR
PRESENTATIONS
February 21-23, 2002 - Inner Harbor, Baltimore, Maryland
The theme of the 17th Annual NASTS Conference is "The Way We Live: Can We
Live With What We Create?" The NASTS Annual Meeting is relatively small and
very personal, emphasizing dialog and connections among its diverse members.
It is a unique gathering of university faculty, K-12 teachers, engineers,
ethicists, business persons, and environmentalists who are interested and
committed to science, technology and society.

2. 9TH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SOCIETY AND RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
June 2-5, 2002 - Bloomington Indiana University Campus, Indiana
The theme of this year's ISSRM is "Choices and Consequences: Natural
Resources and Societal Decision-Making." Symposium sub-themes include:
Natural Resources Conflict, Capacity Management, Managing Current and
Emerging Natural Resources Issues, and Integrating Natural Resources
Management Within a Framework of Public Norms, Expectations, and Managerial
Systems.
The deadline for Proposal submissions is January 15, 2002. Please visit the

3. EDUCATION AND SEPTEMBER 11 - CALL FOR PAPERS
Teachers College Record invites contributions for a special issue/forum on
TCRecord Online that will encompass multiple and diverse perspectives on
September 11th and its aftermath. TCR Online allows for a wide variety of
formats-short essays and personal reflections (1000-3000 words), along with
longer academic articles (5000-7000 words). All contributions for the
special issue should be submitted via the TCR online site. Contributions
will be published over the next several months and then retained in a
special TCR collection along with an online discussion forum.
Application Deadline: January 31, 2002. Suggested paper themes are listed in

4. COLORADO ALLIANCE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE - CALL
FOR PRESENTATIONS
May 3-5, 2002 - Snow Mountain Ranch, Winter Park, Colorado
CAEE's annual conference, "Teaching OUTSIDE the Box: Creative Uses of Nature
in Education," is designed to help participants rediscover the natural
world, learn and play. Workshop strands include Natural History, EE Trends
and Techniques, Arts, Stewardship, Cultural History, Team Building, Outdoor
Skills and Whimsicalities.

5. COLLABORATIVE FUND FOR YOUTH-LED SOCIAL CHANGE
The Ms. Foundation for Women's Collaborative Fund for Youth-Led Social
Change invites Letters of Intent from community-based youth organizations.
The Fund seeks to support and strengthen organizations that combine positive
youth development and social change action with a gender- conscious
approach.
The Fund will provide grants of $35,000 per year for up to three years to
approximately 12 girl-only and mixed-gender youth organizations that work in
specific geographic communities across the United States. In addition to
grants, the Fund will provide technical assistance and learning
opportunities to grantees, donors, and other partners. Letters of Intent are
due November 30th.

6. ARSENIC STANDARD FOR DRINKING WATER
On October 31st EPA Administrator Christie Whitman announced that the agency
would reduce the acceptable level of arsenic in drinking water from the
current 50 parts per billion to 10 parts per billion. The compliance date
for the new standard has been set for 2006.

7. JOURNEY SOUTH
Follow an experimental flock of whooping cranes from Wisconsin to the
Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. Highlights of the
specialized flight training and the migration are posted on the Web as they
occur this fall and summarized by email every Friday during the migration
(estimated through November or early December). Lesson plans, background
information on whooping cranes and pictures from the journey are available

8. ACCESS NATURE
The National Wildlife Federation's new inclusive nature curriculum, Access
Nature, helps children make a personal connection to the natural world. The
adaptations that follow each of the 45 hands-on activities provide educators
(formal and non-formal) with the tools to engage participants with hearing,
learning/cognitive, motor and visual disabilities alongside their peers
without disabilities. Other features include: alignment with the National
Science Education Standards, general disability-related teaching guidelines,
a fully developed action project complete with accessibility guidelines, and

9. THE LEARNING WEB
The Learning Web provides online lesson plans, activities, tutorials (some
downloadable and printable in .pdf), and links to references dealing with
interdisciplinary studies of natural science. Learning Web culls pages
appropriate for K-12 instruction from the US Geological Survey (USGS)'s vast
online collection of fact sheets, data, and program sites.

10. ART & ECOLOGY
A set of resources for teachers and students, including selected readings on
a variety of environmental, social, and cultural issues. The main sections
of the site investigate artistic orientations, artworks, and community
and/or global issues along with historic, critical, and aesthetic dimensions
of art education, ecology, and interdisciplinary approaches to developing
comprehensive discipline-based art education curricula. A project of the J.

11. VIRGINIA OFFICE OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
Virginia's Governor Gilmore established an Office of EE in the Virginia
Department of Environmental Quality on August 23rd, based on the
recommendations of the Virginia Environmental Education Advisory Committee
(VEEAC). In addition to promoting Virginia Naturally, the statewide
environmental education campaign, the Office of EE will coordinate
Virginia's new Love-A-Tree program and the implementation of Virginia's
Chesapeake Bay Education Plan.

12. BILL STAPP REMEMBERED
A poem written in honor of Dr. Bill Stapp, a founder of environmental
education internationally, who passed away on May 21st in Ann Arbor,
Michigan. The poem was read as part of a tribute to Dr. Stapp during the
opening of the NAAEE Annual Conference in Little Rock, Arkansas.
