1. NAAEE ANNUAL CONFERENCE - CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
August 6-10, 2002 - Park Plaza Hotel, Boston, Massachusetts

The 31st annual NAAEE conference, the "Boston TEE (Total Environmental
Education) Party," will follow four strands, each in some way reflective of
Boston's pivotal place in United States and world history. Each strand will
feature workshops, concurrent sessions, poster sessions, interacts and a
keynote speaker.  The strands are EE Through Time, Designing and Planning
Spaces, Environmental Justice and The Role of Higher Education in EE.

2. EECOM 2002 CONFERENCE - CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
August 12-15, 2002 - Montreal (Quebec), Canada

The theme for EECOM's 2002 conference is "Communit'ee and Its Challenge -
Culture - Solidarity - Action: Reflecting upon community and placed based
environmental education in action."  Proposals are now being accepted for
practical workshops, presentations and cracker barrels around the three
conference threads.  The EECOM 2002 Conference is co-hosted by EECOM, the
Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication, and by
AQPERE, l'Association québécoise pour la promotion de l'éducation relative à
l'environnement.

3. ARKANSAS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION - CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
June 18-20, 2002 - Little Rock, Arkansas

AEEA's 2002 Exposition will focus on urban, rural, and natural environmental
issues through its theme, "Prescription for Environmental Health."
Participants will be provided with an opportunity to "take their
 temperature" and evaluate the health of their home, neighborhood, local

4. LEADERSHIP FOR A CHANGING WORLD

Leadership for a Changing World recognizes 20 outstanding leaders and
leadership groups not yet broadly known beyond their immediate community or
field. Awardees receive  $100,000 over two years to support their work and
$30,000 for additional learning activities. Leaders must be nominated and
nominees must be U.S. residents working on domestic issues and who have
worked for at least four years in the area for which they are being
nominated.

5. ENVIRONMENTALIST OF THE YEAR AWARD

The Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF)'s 2002
Environmentalist of the Year Award and $50,000 prize will be given to an
individual or corporation that has made extraordinary leadership
contributions toward activities related to waste recycling, processing,
reuse, or disposal anywhere in the world.

Nominations are being sought internationally and are due February 15, 2002.

6. NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT OF 2001

The Senate gave final congressional approval to the No Child Left Behind Act
of 2001, a revision of the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act, by a
vote of 87-10 on December 18th. A Senate approved amendment to an earlier
version of the bill (S.1), incorporating the John Chafee Environmental
Education Act, was taken out in final conference and Math and Science
Partnerships were allocated $12.5 million of the $450 million requested for
FY 2002 in the original H.R. 1.   The final bill authorizes $26.5 billion in
federal spending on education and requires standardized testing in math and
reading for grades 3-8 beginning in 2005.

7. NATIONAL AUDUBON SOCIETY'S CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT
December 14 - January 5, 2002

The primary objective of the Christmas Bird Count is to monitor the status
and distribution of bird populations across the Western Hemisphere.  More
than 50,000 observers participate each year in this all-day census of
early-winter bird populations. The results are compiled into the longest
running database in ornithology, representing over a century of unbroken
data on trends of early-winter bird populations across the Americas.
Participants 18 years of age and under can participate for free. All others
are asked to pay $5.00 to help Audubon cover CBC program costs.

8. GROWING AWARENESS: 5th ANNUAL SOUTHWEST YOUTH GARDENING CONFERENCE
February 22 - 23, 2002 - Metro Tech High School, Phoenix, Arizona

This year's conference will focus on Youth Gardening and the multitude of
environments in which it occurs: schools, youth development programs,
community centers, senior centers, etc. From a line up of national and
regional experts, to hands-on training and built in networking activities,
this conference promises to provide the tools and information necessary to
make any youth garden a success.

9. ADOPT-A-WATERSHED NATIONAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
July 13-20, 2002 - Bend Oregon

The goal of the National Leadership Institute is to provide professional
development to equip a leadership team with the information, skills, and
shared vision to develop and establish high quality, self-sustaining
Adopt-A-Watershed programs in schools within their designated watershed. The
eight-day Summer Institute provides intensive leadership training in the
integration of educational standards, curriculum application to local
environments, and service-learning concepts.

10. CLEARWATER

This 106-foot, wooden sailboat offers hands-on, environmental education
field trips for 3rd through 12th graders. While aboard, students help raise
sail and collect live specimens from the river. Next, they explore learning
stations focused on invertebrates, fish, navigation, habitat studies, water
chemistry and boat physics. Sails are three or five hours long and depart
from 40 different docks from Albany to New York City. Contact the Sail

11. HOW BIG IS YOUR BACKYARD?

This secondary school environmental ethics curriculum, based on the
Institute for Global Ethics' Ethical Fitness model, prepares educators and
students to recognize the ethical issues that surround some of the world's
toughest environmental problems. How does one balance the need for
development with the intrinsic value of natural lands?  How does one raise
his or her standard of living while striving to cut back on consumption and
waste production?   By combining teachings in ecology, natural history,
environmental issues, and ethical decision-making, this curriculum allows
students to think through some of these tough questions. Students are given
the tools to apply ethical principles both to resolve these issues for
themselves and to participate in their communities in thoughtful and
decisive ways.

12. PORTAGE COUNTY GROUNDWATER WEB SITE

The Portage County Groundwater web site, sponsored by the Portage County
Planning and Zoning Department of Wisconsin, features the county's
groundwater problems as well as goals and management strategies, ideas for
teaching adults and students about groundwater, and opportunities for public
involvement.  Although some information and maps focus specifically on
Portage County, much of the information is applicable to other areas.
