1. NEW ENGLAND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ALLIANCE CONFERENCE - CALL FOR
WORKSHOPS
October 4-6 - Geneva Point Center, Moultonborough, NH
The New England Environmental Education Alliance (NEEEA) and New
Hampshire Environmental Educators invite workshop proposals for the 2002
NEEEA conference. Workshop proposals should address the conference theme,
"Teaching Conservation in the Land of Plenty." Workshop proposal are due

2. ASSOCIATION FOR STUDIES IN LITERATURE AND ENVIRONMENT CONFERENCE - CALL
FOR PAPERS
September 6-8 - University of Leeds, Bretton Hall Campus, Wakefield,
Yorkshire, UK
Abstracts are being accepted for the third biannual conference of the UK
branch of the Association for Studies in Literature and Environment.
Proposals can focus on any aspect of the conference theme, "Creativity,
Culture and Environment," including any forms of creativity in the arts and
cultural representations of environment. Eco-criticism, eco-feminism and
eco-poetics will be strongly represented.

3. ASSOCIATION FOR SUPERVISION AND CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE - CALL
FOR PRESENTATIONS
March 8-10, 2003 - San Francisco, California
The theme of ASCD's 58th Annual conference is, "Igniting the Passion for
Learning - Innovative Responses to Complex Issues." Presentation proposals
may be submitted online or printed out from the ASCD website. Proposal
Deadline: May 1st.
ASCD is one of the world's largest education organizations with over 163,000

4. GLORIA BARRON PRIZE FOR YOUNG HEROES
The Barron Prize seeks to recognize young people from diverse backgrounds
who have shown extraordinary leadership in making our world a better place
by helping people, protecting the environment, halting violence, or leading
other important service work. Winners of the Barron Prize, who may range in
age from 8 to 18 years old, receive $2,000. Nominations are made by adults
familiar with the nominee's service activity, but cannot be family members.

5. COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING GRANT
The National Tree Trust, a non-profit tree planting organization, has grants
available for tree seedlings through the Community Tree Planting program.
Seedlings are available for delivery January through April 2003. Seedlings
are allocated on a first come, first served basis. The main requirements of
the grant include: planting trees on public land, utilizing volunteers for
planting and/or maintaining seedlings, obtaining matching funds, and two
years of annual
reporting.
This is a two-part application process, with the Seedling Request Form due
May 31st and the Project Information Form due October 1st. For more

6. EPA BUDGET PROPOSAL FOR FY 2003 - UPDATE
EPA Administrator Christie Whitman testified before the House and Senate
Appropriations Subcommittees on VA, HUD and Independent Agencies about the
EPA's proposed budget for FY 2003 on March 12th and 20th respectively.
During Whitman's testimony members of both committees expressed their
support for environmental education and the continuance of funding for EPA's
Environmental Education Program. Administrator Whitman also spoke favorably
about EPA's Environmental Education Program during the Senate hearing.
Congressional supporters included Rep. Meek (D-FL), Rep.Walsh (R-NY), Chair
of the House Subcommittee, Senator Kohl (D-WI) and Senator Mikulski (D-MD),
Chair of the Senate Subcommittee. Subcommittee markups are anticipated to
begin in May or June.

7. NEW HAMPSHIRE ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATORS ANNUAL MEETING
April 9 - Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forest's Conservation
Center, Concord, NH
NHEE's annual meeting will include a panel and roundtable on service
learning, a tour of the new wing of the Conservation Center, a panel and
roundtable on environmental education at the core of curriculum, dinner,
business meeting, and featured speaker David Carroll. This year's annual
meeting promises to be a great opportunity for networking, professional

8. WILDLIFE TRADE - SUITCASE FOR SURVIVAL TRAINING COURSE
April 23-24 - Denver Zoo, Denver, Colorado
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are
offering a "trainer of trainers" course to provide an overview of the
"Suitcase for Survival" program and to introduce participants to WWF's new
"Wildlife For Sale" education module. "Suitcase for Survival" educates young
people and adults about legal and illegal wildlife trade using wildlife
products that have been seized by FWS and NOAA agents. This hands-on course
is designed to train trainers and will include techniques, current wildlife
trade issues, and integrating wildlife trade and biodiversity into ongoing
programs.
Application Deadline: Open Until Filled. An additional benefit of attending
this course: Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, WV will give participants a

9. TRAINING TOOLS AND LEARNING GUIDELINES FOR NON-FORMAL EDUCATORS
July 8-10 - Shepherdstown, WV
This training is designed to help non-formal educators strengthen their
ability to connect with classroom teachers. During the 2 ½ days of engaged
learning, participants gain cutting-edge information about formal education
terminology and practices, pedagogy, learning standards, student assessment,
and current environmental education resources. Participants are introduced
to the Excellence in Environmental Education - Guidelines for Learning
(K-12) and learn how to use the Guidelines as a tool to develop and evaluate
quality environmental education materials and programs. Sessions model ways
that participants can present materials so that non-formal educators can
sharpen and enhance teacher development initiatives. The agenda is guided
by a needs assessment which is sent in advance to all participants.

available for non-federal participants. Scholarship applications should be

(approximately one page) should address your present position, provide
complete contact information, describe your involvement with training
teachers, and indicate a good guess of travel expenses (not including room
and board at the workshop). To be considered for a scholarship, you MUST
apply for the course through NCTC. All application materials must be in by
May 13th.
10. ENERGY DESIGN GUIDELINES FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE SCHOOLS
The Department of Energy (DOE) has released the first of seven volumes of
design guidelines for energy-efficient schools. The new design guidelines
cover a wide range of technologies for schools in hot and dry climates, and
also include numerous case studies from schools around the country. The
remaining six volumes will cover the other U.S. climate zones and will be
released by this summer. DOE aims to help school districts achieve energy
savings as they renovate old schools or build new ones - U.S. school
districts are expected to spend $79 billion on such projects over the next
three years. The design guidelines are a product of EnergySmart Schools, a
part of DOE's Rebuild America Program.

11. CONFRONTING CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE GULF COAST REGION
This new curriculum guide, produced by the Union of Concerned Scientists, is
designed to bring global warming science and solutions home to students in
the Southeast. Based on the findings of the 2001 report "Confronting
Climate Change in the Gulf Coast Region: Prospects for Sustaining Our
Ecological
Heritage," the activities in the guide are backed by sound science and meet
state-specific science education criteria. These teaching materials are
written for students and teachers in grades 9-12, although individual
exercises are adaptable to other grade levels.
A set of hard copies of all materials-including the report, curriculum
guide, and state-specific supplementary materials-can be purchased for $25.
