1. ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
IJESD is a fully referred international journal whose aim is to foster the
debate on environment and sustainable development, tackling these issues in
an integrated way. The journal's range of themes encompasses ecological
studies, field research, empirical work and descriptive analyses.
Papers, case studies, technical and conference reports, etc. are invited for

2. PLANTING AMERICA'S FUTURE AWARDS
The National Tree Trust, a national leader in programs supporting community
tree planting and education efforts, has established an award to honor
outstanding achievements in volunteerism and community forestry.
Applications are now being accepted for the Planting America's Future
Awards, which will be presented to three individuals or organizations that
have demonstrated success in mobilizing local citizens, business, government
and others in projects to improve their community through the use of
volunteers and trees. There are three award categories: Youth Environmental
Stewardship Award, Success in Environmental Education Award, and The
Trammell Crow Community Partnership Award.

3. EPA BUDGET PROPOSAL FOR FY 2003 - UPDATE
Twenty-one Representatives joined Rep. George Miller (D-CA), Ranking
Democrat on the House Education and Workforce Committee and an original
cosponsor of the National Environmental Education Act of 1990, in expressing
their support for EPA's Environmental Education Program. Rep. Miller's Dear
Colleague letter to the House VA, HUD and Independent Agencies
Appropriations Subcommittee in support of returning funding to EPA for
Environmental Education had the following signatories: Adam Smith (D-WA);
Barbara Lee (D-CA); Jim Moran (D-VA); Hilda Solis (D-CA); Frank Pallone
(D-NJ); Chris Shays (R-CT); Sherrod Brown (D-OH); Gene Green (D-TX); Tom
Barrett (D-WI); Jay Inslee (D-WA); Dennis Moore (D-KS); David Bonior (D-MI);
Betty McCollum (D-MN); Earl Hilliard (D-AL); Dale Kildee (D-MI); Luis

4. ASK THE EXPERT
April 15-May 15 -Online
NAAEE has organized a series of discussions to give environmental educators
the chance to pick the brains of nationally recognized experts. Ron
Hellstern, NAAEE Commissioner for Elementary and Secondary Education and
NAAEE's first Expert in residence, will discuss projects that link students
with professional scientists who actually want, and need, their data. Read
brief descriptions of several of Ron's favorite projects, along with some
general questions and answers about environmental education, and use the
online discussion forum to ask specific questions or to share information
about your favorite EE projects.

6. GROUNDWATER UNIVERSITY
June 18-20 - Platte River State Park, Nebraska
Sponsored annually by The Groundwater Foundation, the purpose of GU is to
provide students (ages 12-15) with the opportunity to learn about
groundwater and other environmental issues through fun and interesting
activities, presentations, experiments, and field trips. GU gives
participants the chance to experience groundwater first-hand, outside of
traditional classroom walls. GU will also include a workshop for community
educators who have the desire to sponsor a GU event locally.

7. DUNES 104: GREAT LAKES INSTITUTE
July 26-30, Indiana
K-8 educators (formal and non-formal) are invited to a 5-day workshop
that will change your perspective on Lake Michigan. Two nights will be
spent on the EPA's Lake Guardian Research Ship and two nights at the
Indiana Dunes Environmental Learning Center (IDELC). Participants will use
the Great Lakes In My World curriculum, developed by the Lake Michigan
Federation, to explore issues that face Lake Michigan, discuss solutions and
unravel ecological mysteries of the Great Lakes.
Participants can earn 3 hrs. of graduate credit through Indiana University

8. NAAEE ANNUAL CONFERENCE - REGISTRATION PACKET
August 6-10 - Park Plaza Hotel, Boston, Massachusetts
The 31st annual NAAEE conference, the "Boston TEE (Total Environmental
Education) Party," will follow four strands, each in some way reflective of
Boston's pivotal place in United States and world history. Each strand will
feature workshops, concurrent sessions, poster sessions, interacts and a
keynote speaker. The strands are EE Through Time, Designing and Planning
Spaces, Environmental Justice and The Role of Higher Education in EE.

9. TROPICAL ECOLOGY COURSES
Summer - Belize and Kauai, Hawaii
Courses in coral reef ecology, tropical fish biology and rainforest
diversity will be offered this summer through Antioch University in Belize
and Kauai. Courses are offered for audit, clock hours, or at the 400 and 500
(master degree) level.
- Belize--Ambergris Caye-June 21-29: Tropical Reef Ecology and Tropical
Fish Biology and Mopan River-June 29-July 6: Rainforest Ecology and Birds
of the Rainforest.

10. NATIONAL BIODIVERSITY EDUCATION LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
November 5-10 - Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando, Florida
World Wildlife Fund and Disney's Animal Kingdom are looking for 40 formal
and nonformal leaders to participate in "The National Biodiversity Education
Leadership Institute." The institute is open to education leaders from
across the country who work at the local or state level and have a
responsibility for reaching out to others in their organizations,
communities, or state. There is no cost for institute tuition, educational
materials, and housing and meals during the institute.

11. LITTLE ROCK DECLARATION IN SUPPORT OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
The North American Association of Environmental Education (NAAEE) is seeking
support from other environmental and educational organizations for a
declaration it intends to present to political leaders in the United States,
Canada, and Mexico asking for greater political support and funding for
environmental education. The Little Rock Declaration was crafted through
input from NAAEE members, most of them professional educators, at their
annual conference in October 2001 and via email through a committee. NAAEE's
Board of Directors approved the final wording in March.

12. SCHOOLS GO GREEN
The Center for Environmental Education of Antioch New England Graduate
School has launched a new initiative for spreading the word about exciting
projects kids and schools are doing for environmental preservation. For the
next year they will be regularly showcasing the great work of schools who
are partnered with the Center for Environmental Education. The purpose of
this initiative is to spark ideas for other great projects, and to encourage
long term support for the Schools Go Green Grant program.
