1. ALASKA NATURAL RESOURCE AND OUTDOOR EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE ? CALL FOR PROPOSALS

November 7 ? 9 - Alaska Pacific University, Anchorage, Alaska

 

The Alaska Natural Resource and Outdoor Educators Association (ANROE) invite the environmental and education community to participate in ?Discovering and Defining Environmental Education in Alaska.?  This statewide conference will target a broad audience including formal and non-formal, agency and industry, rural and Native educators.  Through a variety of workshops, presentations, exhibits and forums ANROE hopes to provide participants the opportunity to discover and define what Environmental Education means in Alaska. The conference will follow three strands: Program Planning and Organization, Teaching Environmental Education, and Environmental Education Resources in Alaska.

2. THE LONDON REVIEW OF EDUCATION ? CALL FOR PAPERS

 

The London Review of Education is a new academic journal concerned with the promotion and dissemination of informed analysis of large issues of relevance to education today.  In seeking to promote debate on the major challenges facing education systems throughout the world, the London Review of Education will represent within its volumes scholarly analysis written from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and points of view, including philosophy, history, psychology, sociology, economics, management and comparative studies as applied to education and its related fields.

 

The first edition of the journal will be published in March 2003. Submission guidelines are available at:

3. GLOBALISATION, SOCIETIES AND EDUCATION ? CALL FOR PAPERS

 

Globalisation, Societies and Education aims to fill the gap between the study of education and broader social, economic and political forces by analysing the complexities of globalisation. The journal will thereby seek to provide means for affecting, as well as reflecting the experiences, distribution, contributions and outcomes of education at all levels and in all settings. The Editors seek to encourage and include more innovative means for communicating information, ideas, debates and arguments on globalisation, education and societies. The journal will include interviews with prominent intellectuals, activists and leaders, website reviews, commentaries on debates and will offer opportunities for the _expression_ of a range of viewpoints.

4. NATIONAL TREE TRUST'S GROWING TOGETHER PROGRAM

 

The National Tree Trust's Growing Together program is now accepting applications for the 2002-2003 school year.  Through Growing Together (GT), students and educators can grow trees from seeds.  The National Tree Trust provides grow containers, activity guides, and a monetary allotment to jump-start the program for grades K-6th.  Applicants must work with a minimum of 250 students and complete a brief evaluation at the end of the traditional school year.

5. TARGET ALL-AROUND SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDENTS

 

Target awards scholarships each year to well-rounded high school seniors and college students (under age 24) who are committed to community service and education.  Target will award four $10,000 and over 2,100 $1,000 scholarships for higher education (two per Target store). Awards are offered for institution costs and fees for full-time, post-secondary, undergraduate educational programs. The program is not currently offered in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, or outside the United States.

6. CALIFORNIA WILDERNESS BILL

 

Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) announced on May 11th her plan to introduce the California Wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 2002 in the Senate, which will protect approximately 2.5 million acres of public lands in 77 different areas across the state, as well as the free-flowing portions of 22 rivers.  Representatives Mike Thompson (D- Eureka, Ft. Bragg, Napa), Hilda Solis (D-East LA, El Monte) and Sam Farr (D- Salinas, Santa Cruz) will be introducing parallel California Wilderness and Wild Rivers legislation in the House.

7. SECOND ANNUAL WRITERS? CONFERENCE AND WORKSHOP IN HONOR OF RACHEL CARSON

June 11-14 - The Spruce Point Inn, Boothbay Harbor, Maine

 

Nature and Environmental Writers - College and University Educators (NEW-CUE), a non-profit, environmental education organization, is sponsoring its second annual writers? conference in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.  The event will be a blend of presentations by award-winning authors and journalists, readings, informal discussions, writing workshops and a variety of guided, outdoor activities. The Conference/Workshop will also celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the publication of Silent Spring, and author Bill McKibben will deliver the Keynote Address.

8. NATIONAL SCHOOL GARDENING SYMPOSIUM

July 11-13 ?Norris University Center, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois


The first National School Gardening Symposium, co-sponsored by the Chicago
Botanic Garden and the U.S. Botanic Garden, will feature presentations and workshops by practitioners and national experts in the field. Presentations will address the latest in school gardening: school garden programs, interdisciplinary plant science curricula projects, related program evaluation, organizational leadership and funding.

9. NAAEE ANNUAL CONFERENCE ? EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION

The 31st annual NAAEE conference, the ?Boston TEE (Total Environmental Education) Party,? will follow four strands, each in some way reflective of Boston's pivotal place in United States and world history. Each strand will feature workshops, concurrent sessions, poster sessions, interacts and a keynote speaker.  The strands are EE Through Time, Designing and Planning Spaces, Environmental Justice and The Role of Higher Education in EE.

11. RETHINKING THE AMERICAN DREAM

 

?Rethinking the American Dream,? and its companion study guide, is designed to raise awareness about our nation?s consumptive ways, help viewers evaluate their current lifestyles, and introduce choices that can improve our natural environment and quality of life. 12. ACCESS NATURE

 

The National Wildlife Federation's inclusive nature curriculum, Access Nature, helps children make a personal connection to the natural world.  The adaptations that follow each of the 45 hands-on activities provide educators (formal and non-formal) with the tools to engage participants with hearing, learning/cognitive, motor and visual disabilities alongside their peers without disabilities. Other features include: alignment with the National Science Education Standards, general disability-related teaching guidelines, a fully developed action project complete with accessibility guidelines, and a disability-related resource section.
