1. ALLIANCE FOR NEW JERSEY ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE - CALL
FOR PRESENTATIONS
January 9-11, 2003 - Rider University, Lawrenceville, New Jersey

All citizens need to be environmentally literate in order to make wise,
informed decisions regarding their home, school, community, state, nation,
and world. Interesting and thoughtful conference tracks will develop ANJEE's
conference theme "Are You Environmentally Literate?" by supplying educators
with the tools they need reach all learners, including under-served
populations.  Conference tracks include: environmental literacy and natural
history, EE in urban environments, outreach to diverse audiences, and issues
and resources for administrators.

2. CANON NATIONAL PARKS SCIENCE SCHOLARS PROGRAM FOR THE AMERICAS

The Canon National Parks Science Scholars Program is a collaborative
partnership of Canon U.S.A., Inc., the American Association for the
Advancement of Science and the U.S. National Park Service. The program will
be awarding eight $78,000 scholarships to Ph.D. students throughout the
Americas to conduct research critical to conserving the national parks of
the region. Research projects in the biological, physical, social and
cultural sciences are eligible, as well as projects in a new
category-technology innovation in support of conservation science.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FELLOWSHIPS

The ELP Fellowship is a national program designed to build the leadership
capacity of the environmental field's most promising emerging professionals
from the United States and U.S. territories. The three-year fellowship
provides training, project support, and a peer network to 25 talented and
diverse individuals each year from all sectors of the environmental field,
including nonprofits, business, government, and higher education.

Applicants should be relatively new to the environmental field, with
approximately three to ten years of professional experience or
post-undergraduate academic studies, and must be residents of the United
States or U.S. territories. Deadline: October 1st.

4. NAAEE ANNUAL CONFERENCE - SCHOLARSHIPS
August 6-10 - Park Plaza Hotel, Boston, Massachusetts

NAAEE's Higher Education Commission will be awarding 16 scholarships for
this year's NAAEE conference.  Each scholarship will consist of: one student
registration; and, a one-year student membership at NAAEE.  Scholarships are
also available for the Environmental Education Training Institute - Focus on
Non-Formal Educators, a pre-conference workshop.  Non-formal educators can
apply for a scholarship to cover the cost of the pre-conference workshop,
the conference registration fee and a one-year NAAEE membership. Successful
applicants will be reimbursed once their conference and workshop
registration forms have been received.

5. NWF's CAMPUS ECOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM - DEADLINE EXTENDED

The National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Fellowship Program offers
the perfect opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to harness
their vision of a green campus by working collaboratively with staff,
faculty and administrators. Through this nationally recognized program,
fellows receive a modest grant, project support, and networking among
current and alumni fellows and NWF interns.

6. EPA BUDGET PROPOSAL FOR FY 2003 - UPDATE

The House VA, HUD and Independent Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee is
expected to begin mark-up of the EPA's FY 2003 budget proposal in late June
or early July. Both House and Senate leaders on the VA, HUD and Independent
Agencies Appropriations Subcommittees continue to express strong support for
maintaining funding and responsibilities for environmental education within
the EPA's Office of Environmental Education.

7. SUMMER AQUATIC INSTITUTE
July 22-25 - Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe, IL

Join educators, scientists and natural resource professionals in a four-day
water education program.  This holistic approach to knowledge building in
aquatic ecology will feature the geologic history of Illinois, Project WET
and groundwater-related curricula, chemical and biological testing of
freshwater communities, and a culminating canoe trip in the Skokie Lagoons.

Two graduate credits through Aurora University, two lane credits for Chicago
Public Schools, or six CEU's toward Illinois teacher re-certification will
be available. Recommended for grade 4-12 teachers. For more information

8. EDUCATION AND SUSTAINABILITY: RESPONDING TO THE GLOBAL CHALLENGE

The IUCN Commission on Education and Communication has released a new book
that tells the stories of people who work with communities to motivate them
to create a more sustainable future. The book provides a platform for people
from around the world to tell their stories in education for sustainability
and share lessons learnt since the Rio Summit. The stories range from
engaging communities through theatre to a revival of indigenous stories to
pass on good environmental practice as well as how to mainstream sustainable
development principles in organisations.

9. DIRECTOR'S GUIDE TO BEST PRACTICES

The "Director's Guide to Best Practices" includes chapters on five essential
areas: leadership, strategic planning, boards, staff, and fund raising. The
Association of Nature Center Administrators (ANCA) developed this book for
busy directors and staff people with many roles and responsibilities. As a
resource for upper level undergraduates and graduate students majoring in
EE, Interpretation and Camp Management the personal contributions from
professionals in the field provide invaluable real life examples and
experiences that would be difficult to arrive at from a standard college
text.

10. FUNDING FOR HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECTS: A CITIZEN'S GUIDE

This funding guide, compiled by Restore America's Estuaries, provides a
quick, comprehensive and accessible review of the often hidden federal funds
that may be used to implement on-the-ground habitat restoration projects.
