1. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH IN SCIENCE TEACHING ENVIRONMENTAL
EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM - CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS
March 23-26, 2003 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The Environmental Research Interest Group (ERIG) at NARST is soliciting
submissions to form part of a symposium on 'diverse perspectives' of
environmental education at NARST's 2003 meeting in Philadelphia. This will
be a timely dialogue for NARST as much of contemporary Environmental
Education research seeks to make visible distinctions with/in the terms
environmental education, education for sustainability and education for
sustainable development. Within the content of the submissions, ERIG wishes
to explore a spectrum of environmental education perspectives and to
highlight what is fundamental to their distinctiveness and how they
interrelate to other interpretations of environmental education. They would
also like to investigate alternative formats for presenting their symposium
and welcome suggestions.
Please send a brief abstract by July 18th, outlining your research
perspective and ideas about presentation to Ali Sammel (asammel@xxxxxxxxxx).
If there is adequate interest ERIG may propose more than one symposium.

5. EPA BUDGET PROPOSAL FOR FY 2003 - UPDATE
In the absence of a formal budget resolution vote, the House Appropriations
Committee has passed a budget plan to guide spending priorities for the
year. The spending cap placed on the VA, HUD and Independent Agencies
budget will require $677 million in budget cuts from the President's
proposed budget for FY 2003. The House VA, HUD and Independent Agencies
Appropriations Subcommittee's mark-up of the EPA's FY 2003 budget proposal
has been delayed until September.
Both House and Senate leaders on the VA, HUD and Independent Agencies
Appropriations Subcommittees continue to express strong support for
maintaining funding and responsibilities for environmental education within
the EPA's Office of Environmental Education. Additional support has also
come from Senator Snowe (R-ME) who, in response to constituent requests, has
sent a letter of support for retaining funding for EE at EPA to the Senate
VA, HUD and Independent Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee.

countless connections to teaching social studies. The Environmental
Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) plans to coordinate a

Council for Social Studies conference. EETAP is seeking organizations with
an interest in EE to exhibit as part of EE Alley. EE Alley is part of a
commons area approach to exhibiting at large conferences that EETAP has
successfully used in the past. EETAP has coordinated "EE Street" at the
