1. AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION - CALL FOR RESEARCH PAPER
PROPOSALS
April 21 to 25, 2003 - Chicago, Illinois

The Ecological and Environmental Education Special Interest Group (EEE SIG)
of AERA invites submissions of high quality research paper and symposium
proposals for presentation at the annual meeting. EEE SIG is seeking
proposals from beginning and experienced researchers in the areas of
environmental education in formal school or informal education contexts,
education for sustainability (especially in higher education) and related
areas. Topics could include policy studies, research methodology, social
justice issues, ecological issues, international issues, theoretical debates
etc. This year, they are especially interested in paper proposals that
review past EEE research accomplishments and propose specific, practical,
needed research directions in EEE for the next five years. Beginning
researchers are encouraged to submit poster presentation proposals of their
research in progress for consideration.

Submission Deadline: August 1st. Submission guidelines and criteria are
available online. For questions, please contact: J. William Hug, EEE SIG
Program Chair, Chicago 2003, hugw@xxxxxxx

4. NATIONAL BEVERAGE PRODUCER RESPONSIBILITY ACT OF 2002

Introduced by Sen. James Jeffords (I-VT), head of the Senate Committee on
Environment and Public Works, the National Beverage Producer Responsibility
Act of 2002 would shift the burden of recycling from states, cities, and
consumers to the beverage industry, which would be responsible for recycling
at least 80 percent of its containers within two years (currently less than
half of aluminum cans are recycled). Under the terms of the bill, Americans
would pay a deposit of at least 10 cents on cans and bottles, which could be
redeemed upon recycling.

5. CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS BILL

California Gov. Gray Davis (D) signed legislation (A.B. 1493) on July 22nd
that will require automobile manufacturers to reduce the amount of
greenhouse gas emissions coming from the tailpipes of passenger vehicles in
California. Under the terms of the new law, the California Air Resources
Board has until 2005 to set "maximum" but "economically feasible" emissions
standards for gases that contribute to climate change; new automobiles sold
in the state must meet those standards by 2009. The standards will apply to
automakers' fleet averages, rather than each individual vehicle, and
carmakers will be able to partially achieve the standards by reducing
pollution from non-auto sources (e.g. factories, etc.). The bill is expected
to have an impact nationally as California accounts for 10 percent of the
U.S. car market.
