challenge educators to use sustainability as a design theme in their work
and emphasize the need for environmental education to move from theory to
action. The three-day conference will include two complimentary components:
Your Role as an Educator and From Theory to Action, for educators and
members of the general public respectively. Both components will explore
sustainability concepts and the relation to individuals' roles in the
community. Keynote speakers include David Sobel, author of "Children's
Special Places," Paul Loeb, author of "Soul of a Citizen," and Mary Smith of

9. EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT TOOLKIT
The ESD Toolkit is an easy-to-use manual for beginning the process of
combining education and sustainability and will help schools and communities
develop a process to create locally relevant and culturally appropriate
education. The Toolkit is based on the idea that communities and
educational systems need to dovetail their sustainability efforts. Ideally,
local educational systems can reorient existing curriculums to reinforce
local sustainability goals.

10. ECOLOGICAL LITERACY PROJECT
The Ecological Literacy Project engages middle and high school students in a
science-based exploration of their local environment and trains them in
professional radio production. With guidance from radio professionals from
Living On Earth, National Public Radio's weekly environmental news program,
students produce compelling, original audio journalism about topics relevant
to their own lives. Their work is broadcast over local and national radio
and is featured on Living On Earth's website.
