5. EPA BUDGET PROPOSAL FOR FY 2003 - UPDATE

The Senate VA, HUD Appropriations Subcommittee included $9.16
million in funding for environmental education at the EPA. The Senate
Full Appropriations Committee approved this funding and included it in the
budget mark-up. It is anticipated that the House VA, HUD Appropriations
mark-up will be one of the last bills worked on after the election and could
be rolled into an omnibus bill.

The first of at least two short-term continuing resolutions (CR) required to
keep the government running beyond the October 1st start of FY 2003 is
slated to come to the House floor this afternoon. The CR would continue
funding for EPA's environmental education programs at current levels through
Friday, October 4th

6. EARTH SCIENCE WEEK
October 13th-19th

Each year, Earth Science Week focuses on a different facet of Earth science
to help all people gain a better understanding of and appreciation for the
natural world. This year's theme is 'Water is All Around You', emphasizing
the importance of the Earth's greatest natural resource. The theme also
correlates to the American Geological Institute's Environmental Awareness
Series Booklet and Poster 'Water and the Environment', and the U.S.
Geological Survey's National Water Monitoring Day on October 18th. Water
related activities correlated to the National Science Standards are
available from the Earth Science Week web site.

7. NATIONAL WATER MONITORING DAY
October 18th

The Earth Day Network has produced "What's in Your Water?" an educator's
guide for grades 5 - 8 to help teachers and students take part in this
nationwide event by measuring the health of their local watersheds. The
guide provides information about water quality and lesson plans with
hands-on activities for determining the water quality, in the field or in
the classroom. Low cost test kits can be ordered online and classes can
register their water monitoring site with the national Year of Clean Water
Data Collection site.

Printed versions of the guide are available upon request by contacting
education@xxxxxxxxxxxx or 206.876.2004.

12. STORIES FROM WHERE WE LIVE

Stories from Where We Live is part of a growing effort known as place-based
education, which seeks to reconnect kids to the local natural world. Readers
will find in the multiplicity of voices contained in the Stories From Where
We Live anthologies a sense of the many ways people value and respond to the
natural world. The accompanying teaching guides have a strong language arts
emphasis, guiding students not only to read about a region, but to get
outside and record their own observations about what they see and
experience. The curriculum is most suitable for late-elementary and middle
school language arts, social studies, and interdisciplinary environmental
science classes.
