1. THE SCIENCE TEACHER - CALL FOR PAPERS

The Science Teacher, a publication of the National Science Teachers
Association, is seeking manuscripts on inquiry-based units or activities in
biology, chemistry, physics, Earth and space science, and integrated
science. The manuscripts should include appropriate assessment tools and
specifically reference the National Science Education Standards. Manuscripts
should be 2,000 words and describe successful lessons implemented in
secondary classrooms, as well as provide specific details for educators who
might wish to use the activities with their own students. Examples of
student work to illustrate results of a successful lesson are encouraged.

2. PRESIDENT'S ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH AWARDS - DEADLINE CORRECTION

The EPA's PEYA program recognizes young people across America for projects
that demonstrate their commitment to the environment. All students who
complete an environmental project and submit an application will receive a
signed certificate from the President of the United States in recognition of
their accomplishments. One outstanding project from each of the ten EPA
Regions will be presented with a Presidential plaque at an EPA sponsored
award ceremony. To be eligible to compete, a student or students, sponsored
by an adult, must submit to their local EPA regional office evidence of a
completed project as defined in the President's Environmental Youth Award
application, as well as a completed application.

3. GRADUATE TEACHING FELLOWS IN K-12 EDUCATION

The National Science Foundation's (NSF) GK-12 program provides opportunities
to highly qualified graduate and advanced undergraduate students in
NSF-supported disciplines (including the social, behavioral, and economic
sciences) to work directly with K-12 teachers to improve the content of
science and mathematics taught in their classes.  Expected outcomes include
improved communication and teaching skills for the Fellows, enriched
learning by K-12 students, professional development opportunities for GK-12
teachers, and strong partnerships between institutions of higher education
and local school districts. Awards are for initial projects of up to three
years with the potential to apply for a follow-on project of up to five
years.

4. KODAK AMERICAN GREENWAYS AWARDS

The awards are designed to develop new, action-oriented greenway projects;
leverage additional money for conservation and greenway development; and
recognize and encourage greenway proponents and organizations. Grants may be
used for activities such as mapping, ecological assessments, surveying,
conferences, and design activities; developing brochures, interpretative
displays, audio-visual productions, or public-opinion surveys; hiring
consultants; incorporating land trusts; and/or building foot bridges,
planning bike paths, and other creative projects. Awards will primarily go
to local, regional, or statewide nonprofit organizations. Although public
agencies may also apply, community organizations will receive preference.
The maximum grant is $2,500, though most grants will range from $500 to
$1,000.

5. THE NATURE OF LEARNING

The Nature of Learning is a new community-based environmental education
initiative that seeks to use National Wildlife Refuges and other natural
areas as outdoor classrooms to promote a greater understanding of local
conservation issues; encourage an interdisciplinary approach to learning
that seeks to enhance student academic achievement; utilize field
experiences and student-led stewardship projects to connect classroom
lessons to real-world issues; and involve a partnership among local schools,
community groups, natural resource professionals, and local businesses.

The program will award grants of up to $5,000 on a competitive basis to
support start-up expenses. Programs must involve a partnership among a local
school(s), community group (e.g., refuge support group), and National
Wildlife Refuge. Application deadline: June 30th.

6. EE FUNDING INCLUDED IN EPA BUDGET FOR FY03

On February 20th President Bush signed the Consolidated Appropriations
Resolution, 2003 (H J Res 2) (P.L. 108-7) into law, ending negotiations over
the Federal Budget for FY2003. The bill directs the U.S. EPA to
proportionately distribute $9.16 million, from available funds, for
Environmental Education programs in a manner consistent with the provisions
of the National Environmental Education Act of 1990.

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK), Sen. Kit Bond (R-M0), Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD)
and Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) were key supporters of environmental education
funding in the Senate, and Rep. James Walsh (R-NY) and Rep. David Obey
(D-WI) were strong advocates on behalf of the Environmental Education
Program in the House of Representatives.

7. TEACHING ON AND ABOUT THE COLORADO PLATEAU
Colorado Plateau Bioregional Outdoor Education
March 7 - 9 - Blanding Arts and Events Center, CEU- San Juan, Blanding, Utah

The Colorado Plateau Bioregional Outdoor Education Conference brings
together K-6 grade teachers and other educators from the Colorado Plateau
Bioregion to learn how to better incorporate bio-regionally focused hands-on
outdoor education into their classrooms. This year's workshop topics
include: Indigenous Knowledge in EE, Living with Fire on the Colorado
Plateau; Using Problem Based Learning; Developing a Sense of Place; and,
Conflict Resolution.

8. EE IN MINNESOTA: EXPANDING THE CIRCLE
Minnesota Association for Environmental Education
March 21-22 - Rosemount Community Center, Rosemount, Minnesota

The Minnesota Environmental Education Conference is reaching out to
new audiences by holding sessions on new and diverse topics. Concurrent
session topics will relate to: Spirituality and Faith in Environmental
Education; Resource Issues in Environmental Education & Environmental
Justice; Environmental Education Curriculum/Training/Marketing; and, Skills
Building/Leadership/ Environmental Education Research. Open space sessions
are also planned where
conference participants can participate in a free-flowing discussion of
issues relevant to environmental educators in Minnesota.

9. RIPPLE EFFECTS - INTEGRATING ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INTO LEARNING

The Environmental Education Council of Ohio's 36th annual conference will
address issues of education reform, Ohio's new academic content standards,
and celebrate Ohio's bicentennial heritage as a Great Lakes state.
Workshops, fieldtrips and sessions will be offered for all educators from
preschool - high school along three strands: Rock the Boat: Enhancing
Student Achievement; Dive Into Your Local Habitats; and, Make a Splash with
your Environmental Education Organization.

10. LEOPOLD EDUCATION PROJECT FACILITATOR WORKSHOP
April 4 - 6 - Timbercrest Camp, Red Lodge, Montana

The Leopold Education Project (LEP) facilitator workshop will
instruct participants on how to teach the LEP curriculum to other educators
in their community.  It is open to all educators (formal & non-formal),
natural resource professionals, 4-H & Scout leaders, etc.  Cost is $75 per
person and includes meals, lodging, curriculum materials, prizes and more.

11. LEARNING FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT - TOWARDS A NATIONAL (UK) STRATEGY
Council for Environmental Education and the Development Education
Association
April 11th  - Bristol, England

Supported by National Grid, the aims of the conference are to promote the
need for a national strategy for education for sustainable development (ESD)
in England; to learn from approaches in other countries and contexts; and to
build capacity for evaluation and effective practice. The conference is
aimed at policy makers in central and local English government; CEE and DEA
members and networks; and international colleagues with an interest in ESD
in England. Workshops will focus on evaluation and the identification of
good practice in a range of contexts.

12. NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON COASTAL AND ESTUARINE HABITAT RESTORATION
April 13-16 - Hyatt Regency Inner Harbor Hotel, Baltimore, Maryland

The full spectrum of the restoration community will convene for the first
time to advance the practice, knowledge, pace and success of habitat
restoration.  Incorporating the nonprofit, government, business and academic
sectors, this gathering will enable networking and communication throughout
the growing habitat restoration movement.

13. ISLANDWOOD GRADUATE PROGRAM

The Graduate Program in Education at IslandWood (formerly the Puget Sound
Environmental Learning Center) provides students the opportunity to pursue
graduate study that emphasizes integrated curriculum and experiential
learning in the context of the natural and cultural community, and to get
hands-on teaching experience in the school overnight program.  Sixteen
residential graduate students live in a sustainably designed and built
campus located on 255 acres on Bainbridge Island, Washington.  Opportunities
for commuting students are also available.

14. EL AGUA ES IMPORTANTE

El Agua Es Importante: guia de maestro sobre recursos de agua, Volumen 3
includes a teacher's guide and a set of creative and colorful posters
created by the U.S. Geological Survey's Water Resources Education
Initiative. El Agua Es Importante, Volumen 3 is designed to help primary and
middle school teachers satisfy the National Science Education Standards and
provides background
information and suggestions for activities to heighten student interest and
promote query-based, hands-on learning. Topics covered include oceans and
coastal hazards, watersheds, and hazardous waste.

15. YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAM

The American Birding Association's youth program includes a Young Birder of
the Year Contest with 4 modules (essay, field notebook, illustration, and
bird photography) that are adaptable for classroom use, a Scholarship
Program to subsidize attendance at summer camps, a bi-monthly newsletter
called A Bird's-Eye View which is written by and for young birders, and
Youth BirdQuest and Tropicbirds teams which are bird-a-thon events that
combine education, conservation and fund-raising components that are
designed to get young people out into the field to learn more about birds
and raise awareness about bird conservation issues.

16. RESOURCES FOR LEARNING

Food Land and People's interdisciplinary curriculum, Resources for Learning,
currently serves PreK-12 grade students in twenty-three states. The
fifty-five hands-on lessons are objective in content and emphasize the
development of critical thinking skills needed to balance an understanding
of the complex interdependence of food systems and environmental
conservation. In California, Resources for Learning lessons are correlated
to Content Standards for California Public Schools.
