UPDATES FROM THE HILL

6. WHITMAN RESIGNS FROM EPA

Citing personal reasons, Christie Todd Whitman resigned as Director of the Environmental Protection Agency on May 21st.  Administration officials have not announced a successor yet, but possibilities include Florida Environmental Protection Secretary David Struhs; Josephine S. Cooper, a former E.P.A. official and now president and chief executive of the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers; and Tom Skinner, former Illinois state environmental director who is a regional E.P.A. director. Under the Vacancy Reform Act of 1998, Mr. Bush has 210 days in which to name a successor.  If he doesn?t find someone by the time Whitman leaves June 27th, Linda Fisher, the deputy administrator, would probably become the acting administrator.
