1. CALLING ON ALL ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION RESEARCH AND PROGRAM LEADERS
Submission deadline: April 30, 2004
The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) is
"Casting a Wider Net for Environmental Education" (the rest follows) -
Calling on all Environmental Education Research and Program Leaders. This
year's NAAEE conference has 7 strands. For each of them, we are looking for
presentations that provide one or more of the following elements: Insightful
research findings; Proven program models; Skills development; and Dialogue
facilitation. Each strand will combine an Opening Symposium, Concurrent
Sessions, and a Closing session for culminating discussions. The seven
strands are:
- Developing the EE Profession
- The Business of EE - Leadership Development and Institutional Building
- What Research Has to Say to Environmental Educators
- Cultural Diversity in EE Programs
- Sustainability Education
- Topical Smorgasbord: Watersheds and Forestry
- The "Open Mic" Strand

2. TEACHING ISSUES & EXPERIENCES IN ECOLOGY (TIEE) - SEEKING SUBMISSIONS
TIEE is designed to improve ecology teaching by helping undergraduate
faculty include more student-active teaching approaches in ecology courses,
both in lecture and in lab. TIEE is looking for submissions, reviews,
evaluation, and new ideas.

3. CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AWARDS
Nomination Deadline: April 23, 2004
International Paper and The Conservation Fund will provide national
recognition and $10,000 cash grants to two conservation/environmental
education leaders. The Conservation award recognizes an individual who has
achieved significant results in the protection of habitat through a
cooperative relationship with a business or corporation. The Environmental
Education award honors educators who have shown special skills in giving
their students a better understanding of the complex relationship between
environmental protection and economic growth.

4. CALIFORNIA TEACHER ACTION GRANTS
Deadline: May 19, 2004
Aquatic Outreach Institute Grants - Contra Costa and Alameda Counties
program to inspire teachers and students to become better stewards of Contra
Costa County's natural resources; to reduce the amount of pollution entering
creeks and San Francisco Bay; and to protect and improve the quality of
wildlife habitat. A cooperative program developed jointly with the Contra
Costa County Clean Water Program.

5. 2004 AAEE BIENNIAL CONFERENCE
September 28 - October 2, 2004, Adelaide, Australia
Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE) Conference:
"Creating ethical communities now: footprints, pathways and possibilities"
aims to share and develop practical approaches to sustainability education,
with an emphasis on community ownership and participation in activities

6. WILDLIFE CONSERVATION: IN PURSUIT OF ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY
June 16-19, 2004 - Limerick, Ireland
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), in association with the
University of Limerick international forum. The objective of the forum is to
focus attention on, and to advance the understanding of issues surrounding
the pursuit of ecologically sustainable use and the conservation of wildlife
and fisheries.

7. IAGLR CONFERENCE ON GREAT LAKES RESEARCH
May 24 - 28, 2004, University of Waterloo, Ontario
International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) conference theme,
"Great Lakes Need Great Watersheds." Speakers will address aspects of rural
catchments, urban catchments, and airsheds. Sessions planned will build on
the themes of agricultural, urban and atmospheric impacts.

10. ACTIONS TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE GREAT LAKES CONFERENCE
May 5-6, 2004 - Cleveland, Ohio
Conference for federal, state, provincial, regional and tribal/First Nations
governments, environmental stakeholders, business/industry, and all with an
interest in the environmental and economic future of the binational Great
Lakes-St. Lawrence region. Current restoration themes will provide a
framework for breakout sessions focusing on actions being taken, unmet

Michigan Technological University Educators' Professional Development
Institute Series for Teachers (grades 3-12): Interdisciplinary Watershed
Investigations - Teachers will learn methods used in watershed assessment.
Community Land Use - Teachers will apply the six core economic principles to
their local communities, examine the human/environment interaction, and
develop their own community land use plan. Four graduate credits.

12. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES - THE ART OF SCIENCE
June 22 - 24, 2004 - New London, Connecticut
Apply concepts of natural and physical science through music, visual, and

13. ONLINE SUMMER COURSES FOR TEACHERS
National Teachers Enhancement Network (NTEN) is offering 15 Global Warming,
Climate Change and our Environment Summer Online courses for K-12 science
teachers. Course participants will study global warming by exploring the
geography of climate change and resultant wildlife changes in the mountains
and plains of the U.S. and Russia; conduct case studies on climate and
wildlife changes in their local region; and evaluate how these changes are
impacting the ecosystem where they live. Teachers can earn two graduate
semester credits while participating in engaging activities that are
relevant to their classroom teaching.

14. NORTH CAROLINA 2004 ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INSTITUTE
June 6 - 11, 2004 - Salter Path, North Carolina
North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources 2004
Environmental Education Institute: "Environmental Education in the
Albemarle-Pamlico Sounds Region". Free professional development opportunity
for teachers (K-12) to integrate Environmental Education into North Carolina
's Standard Course of Study Curriculum focusing on inquiry-based field
investigations and hands-on activities. Curriculum materials are provided
and teachers earn CEU credits and Environmental Education Certification
credits.

15. MIGRANTS, RAPTORS AND RESIDENTS WORKSHOP
April 24, 2004 - Pisgah Forest, NC
The USDA Forest Service offers this workshop in partnership with the North
Carolina Wildlife Commission and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Get
outdoors and learn about migratory birds of the Southeast and how to
recognize common birds of our local forests. Go with a wildlife biologist
to perform a mock bird survey. Learn about local, national and international
issues and solutions relating to migrations. There will also be an
opportunity to see and learn about live raptors from Wildlife Rehab, Inc.
The workshop qualifies for North Carolina environmental education criteria
III credit and a 0.6 continuing education unit.

16. NEW-CUE WRITERS' CONFERENCE
June 15 - 18, 2004 - Boothbay Harbor, Maine
Third NEW-CUE Writers' Conference and Workshop in honor of Rachel Carson for
Nature and Environmental Writers - College and University Educators. This
interdisciplinary event will be a blend of scholarly presentations,
readings, information discussions, and writing workshops. For experienced
and novice writers, faculty with and without experience teaching
environmental issues, and those who are interested in learning more about
the natural environment.

17. CHILDREN'S CONFERENCE ON THE ENVIRONMENT (ICC04)
July 19 - 23, 2004 - New London, Connecticut
Children (ages 10 - 13) from close to 100 countries will gather at the
Delegates to ICC04 will learn about and discuss environmental topics around
four major themes issues: Oceans, Rivers and Waterways; Living on the Edge
of Extinction; Indigenous Healing Ways; and Energy.
ICC04 is the largest U.N event dedicated to bringing children from around
the world together to discuss the environment and learn about their rights
and responsibilities as stewards. The conference is a signature event of the
United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

18. GROUNDWATER UNIVERSITY SUMMER CAMP
June 15-17, 2004 - Platte River State Park, Nebraska
The Groundwater Foundation is now accepting applications for Groundwater
University 2004, a summer camp program for junior high and high school
students interested in the environment. Students from across the United
States between the ages of 12 and 15 may apply. Up to 20 students will be
selected to participate. The hands-on event provides students with an
opportunity to learn about a variety of groundwater and related natural
resources topics while being introduced to careers in the environmental
field.

19. PBS NOVA SERIES - WORLD IN THE BALANCE
Airs on PBS Tuesday, April 20th, 8-10 p.m. Nova investigates the impact of
forces that are radically changing populations in both rich and poor
nations. With moving personal stories from India, Japan, Kenya, and China,
"World in the Balance" gives an up-to-date global snapshot of today's human
family, now numbering 6.3 billion and likely to increase to nearly 9 billion
by 2050. Paradoxically, the world is now careening in two completely
different directions.

20. PBS BORDERS ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECT
Lesson plans for K-12 teachers designed to facilitate online storytelling
and sharing. Each of the three lesson plans focuses on Earth, Water or Air,
the three general themes of the P.O.V.'s Borders Environmental project.

25. EARTH DAY 2004 CHALLENGE FOR KIDS
World Wildlife Fund (WWF) "Pennies for the Planet" Earth Day challenge. WWF
is challenging kids to educate others about this year's three target
ecoregions-the Rivers and Streams of the American Southeast, the Madagascar
Dry and Spiny Forests, and the Sulu-Sulawesi Seas of southeast Asia-and to
raise pennies for on-the-ground conservation in each of those places in the
most creative ways they can think of.
