CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2004 NAAEE AWARDS

Submission Deadline:  June 15, 2004

 

The Awards Committee of the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) announces its Call for Nominations for the prestigious annual awards that will be presented this year in Biloxi, Mississippi at the Association's conference in early November. June 15th is the deadline for submitting your nomination for the 2004 awards.

This is your opportunity to recognize individuals and organizations that excel in EE by nominating those who deserve wider recognition for their accomplishments.

1.        NAAEE  CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS ? DEADLINE EXTENDED

Submission Deadline: May 7, 2004

 

The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) is ?Casting a Wider Net for Environmental Education?. This year?s NAAEE conference has 7 strands. For each of them, we are looking for presentations that provide one or more of the following elements: Insightful research findings; Proven program models; Skills development; and Dialogue facilitation.  Each strand will combine an Opening Symposium, Concurrent Sessions, and a Closing session for culminating discussions.  The seven strands are:

- Developing the EE Profession

- The Business of EE - Leadership Development and Institutional Building

- What Research Has to Say to Environmental Educators

- Cultural Diversity in EE Programs

- Sustainability Education

- Topical Smorgasbord Watersheds and Forestry

- The ?Open Mic? Strand

2.        ENVIRONMENTAL DECISION-MAKING STUDY

 

Northwestern University is seeking participants for a study on environmental decision-making. Focus is on understanding the role of values and morality in human decision-making about environmental issues. The experiment is not difficult and will last about 10-15 minutes. At the end, participants will get further details about the purpose of the study.

3.        GROUNDWATER FOUNDATION ? CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

Submission Deadline:  May 31, 2004

The Groundwater Foundation is currently seeking abstracts from potential presenters and exhibitors for its annual conference to be held November 4-5, 2004 in Washington, DC. The theme of the conference will be "Groundwater and Public Health: Making the Connection."

The conference will explore water-related epidemiology, health risk communication, emerging contaminants, pathogens, vulnerability of systems, and public policy relating to human health protection.

4.        2003/2004 CAPCO SCIENCE CLASS CHALLENGE

Deadline:  May 21, 2004

 

Participate in the CAPCO Science Class Challenge and win $500 to $5,000 for your school. For grades 4-9, the competition is meant to encourage students and teachers to learn about the Earth's protective upper ozone layer, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and the environment by using provided activities or their own creative methods.

5.        A BETTER EARTH ENVIRONMENTAL ESSAY CONTEST

6.        GROUNDWATER FOUNDATION NATIONAL YOUTH AWARDS

The Groundwater Foundation is currently accepting nominations for the W.C. Foxley - E.P. Taiganides Youth Award for Excellence and Leadership in Groundwater. This award will honor a youth (age 12-17) for his/her dedication to promoting local groundwater protection.

7.        NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY GRANTS FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

Applications accepted throughout the year.

 

The National Geographic Society awards grants for scientific field research and exploration through its Committee for Research and Exploration. All proposed projects must have both a geographical dimension and relevance to other scientific fields and be of broad scientific interest.

8.        NOMINATE A STUDENT FOR A SUMMER TRIP TO THE AMAZON

Nomination Deadline:  April 24, 2004

 

Rainforest Action Network is teaming up with Nickelodeon to select 4-6 middle school students to take an all-expenses paid trip to the Amazon this summer, to be filmed for television broadcast. Each student selected will travel with one parent and the Nick News crew on a cruise to the Amazon from June 19-27.

9.        ADVENTURES IN ECOLOGY AND EDUCATION - BRAZIL

July 17 - 31, 2004 ? Brazil

 

Designed for educators (teachers, pre-service teachers, and administrators) to visit the Atlantic Rain Forest, the Pantanal, and Sao Paulo. Focus on Brazilian education, visiting schools, talking with educational professionals. Study the ecology and natural history of specific areas and become acquainted with experts and scientists.

10.     AUSTRALIAN SUSTAINABLE SCHOOLS PROGRAM (SSP)

 

The defining feature of the SSP is the integration of existing and fragmented approaches to sustainability education into a holistic program with measurable environmental, educational, economic and social outcomes.  The program implements improvement in a school?s management of resources and management of school grounds and integrates this approach into the existing curriculum and daily running of the school. It is anticipated the program will be implemented nationally by the end of 2005. This will deem Australia the first country to have a SSP in all States and Territories.

11.     NEEAP INVITES ORGANIZATIONS TO LEADERSHIP CLINIC DESIGN WORKSHOP

August 21-24, 2004 - Nebraska City, Nebraska

 

The National Environmental Education Advancement Project (NEEAP) is soliciting applications for their upcoming 2004 Leadership Clinic Design Workshop. The Leadership Clinic Design Workshop is designed to inspire environmental education organizations, partnerships or community interest groups to host conferences that make an immediate difference. Participants will use a new approach and tools for conference, meeting and workshop design to inspire creativity, action and results.

12.     ANCIENT PATHWAYS SOUTHWEST SEMESTER - ARIZONA

13.     CORAL REEF ECOLOGY TEACHERS WORKSHOP - HAWAII

June 20-June 26 - Kona, Hawaii

14.     GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN RESIDENTIAL WORKSHOP ? NORTH CAROLINA

June 28-July 3, 2004 - Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina

 

Workshop featuring lectures, discussions with scientists, and outdoor activities on air quality, mountain bogs, habitat preservation, biodiversity, and human influences. Participate in fieldwork, technology applications, environmental monitoring, and Arc Voyager instruction. Brazilian and Finnish teachers will be participating in the 2004 workshops, offering different perspectives about international education. Two-week summer seminars for teachers of all subjects and graduate students of education at the Walden Woods Project.   Approaching Walden, seminar for high school teachers:  July 12-23, 2004.
