1.        LAST CALL FOR NAAEE CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

Deadline:  May 7, 2004

 

The deadline for the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) Call for Conference Presentations is fast approaching.  This year?s conference theme is Casting a Wider Net for Environmental Education, November 6-10, in Biloxi, Mississippi.  We are seeking presentations that provide one or more of the following elements: Insightful research findings; Proven program models; Skills development; and Dialogue facilitation.  Each of the seven strands will combine an Opening Symposium, Concurrent Sessions, and a Closing session for culminating discussions. The seven strands are:

- Developing the EE Profession

- The Business of EE - Leadership Development and Institutional Building

- What Research Has to Say to Environmental Educators

- Cultural Diversity in EE Programs

- Sustainability Education

- Topical Smorgasbord: Watersheds and Forestry

- The ?Open Mic? Strand

2.        Fullbright Scholar Program

Application Deadline:  August 1, 2004

 

The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering 37 lecturing, research, and lecturing/research awards worldwide in environmental sciences for the 2005-2006 academic year. Awards for both faculty and professionals range from two months to an academic year. While many awards specify project and host institution, there are a number of open "All Disciplines" awards that allow candidates to propose their own project and determine their host institution affiliation. Foreign language skills are needed in some countries, but most Fulbright lecturing assignments are in English.

3.        EPA President's Environmental Youth Awards (PEYA)

Deadline:  July 31, 2004

 

President's Environmental Youth Awards (PEYA) recognizes young people across America for projects that demonstrate their commitment to the environment. K-12 student or students, sponsored by an adult, submit evidence of a completed project as defined in the application (and application) to their local EPA regional office by July 31, 2004.

4.        NFWF Nature of Learning Grants Program

Deadline:  June 28, 2004

 

National Wildlife Refuge System?s new community-based environmental education initiative. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded on a competitive basis to support start-up expenses associated with new programs. In addition, grants of up to $3,000 will be awarded on a competitive basis to provide continued support to existing Nature of Learning programs.

5.        Nicholas Simeon Aleksiuk Environmental Fellowship

Applications available September 2004

 

Applicable in any academic department, this environmental scholarship of $30,000 per year aims to perpetuate the purity of purpose, uncompromising integrity, and humanism displayed by Nicholas Aleksiuk in his pursuit of knowledge during the course of his short life. Applicants should have a record of outstanding academic achievement in the two years of full-time university study immediately preceding application, plus a demonstrated desire to reverse the deterioration of natural environments currently taking place around the world.

6.        Pennsylvania Environmental Education Grants Program

Applications accepted throughout the year.

 

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) sets aside 5% of the pollution fines and penalties collected annually to stimulate environmental education in Pennsylvania. This allocation established a grants program that funds sound EE projects.

7.        David Brower Youth Awards

Deadline:  June 1, 2004

 

Earth Island Institute is accepting applications for the fifth annual David Brower Youth Awards.  People age 13 to 22 who have demonstrated outstanding leadership with projects in environmental Conservation, Preservation or Restoration are encouraged to apply.  Six winners from the U.S. and Puerto Rico will each receive a cash award of $3,000 and ongoing support of their development as environmental leaders (including a scholarship to the Bioneers Conference).

9.        Environmental Education in New Zealand Schools Report

 

Report on current practice in environmental education in New Zealand schools using a range of methods ? a literature review of national and international practice, a national survey of schools, and eight case studies looking at schools/kura where environmental education is a strong focus, and key findings from each research component.

10.     EETAP Resource Library Moves to EE-Link

 

The EETAP Resource Library was started by Ohio State University to make EE resources more accessible to environmental educators.  A major component of the Library is Info-Sheets (1-2 page descriptions that summarize a specific EE topic and identify resources for additional reading).  The Info-Sheets help educators better understand specific topics related to EE and are organized into 8 major categories:  History of EE; Resources for Teaching; Academic Resources; Public Understanding of EE; Capacity Building; Assessment and Evaluation; Decision-making; and Environmental Topics.  New Info-Sheets continue to be added to the EETAP Resource Library collection.

11.     Fundamentals of Environmental Education - online

June 14 - August 20, 2004 and September 13 - November 19, 2004

 

University of Wisconsin Stevens Point ten-week Fundamentals of EE course will be offered via the Internet for three undergraduate or graduate level credits. Non-resident tuition has been waived by UW Stevens Point to make this course available to a national audience. Available for no credit at a reduced cost.

12.     Population Connection Facilitator Training

September 18, 2004 - New Brunswick, New Jersey

Population Connection?s Education Program will be training for educators interested in leading workshops for educators at schools, universities, conferences and other education settings. Open to educators throughout New Jersey, New York City area, and eastern Pennsylvania. No cost to attend; lunch will be provided.

14.     Adopt-A-Watershed Leadership Development - California

The 2004?2005 West Coast Leadership Development Program kicks off with the Summer Leadership Institute in July 2004. The Spring Retreat will be held at Sequoia Seminar in the Santa Cruz Mountains, April 28?May 1, 2005.

15.     Leopold Education Project Workshop - wisconsin

August 27-29, 2004 ? Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

 

The Leopold Education Project?s 9th Annual National Workshop includes hands-on sessions, a trip to the Leopold family Shack, and presentations by Leopold family members and scholars. On 26 August there will be a journaling workshop and new participants with LEP can benefit from a one-day Educator training at the same site, Upham Wood 4H EE Center, Wisconsin Dells, WI.

16.     international conference on Sustainable Development - wisconsin

June 6-10, 2004 - Green Bay, Wisconsin

 

Sharing Indigenous Wisdom: An International Dialogue on Sustainable Development conference hosted by The Sustainable Development Institute at College of Menominee Nation. The conference design will bring together scholars and practitioners who are committed to the concepts of sustainable development. A forum will be created that encourages dialogue, learning, solidarity and cross-fertilization of ideas.

17.     Summer Teacher Institute - CALIFORNIA

June 20-25 - Oakland, California

 

Gold Rush to the Golden Gate Summer Teacher Institute for educators to discover how to integrate watershed concepts and Bay curriculum into their classrooms. Features on-the-water experiences, expert speakers, and hands-on activities. The program will also introduce habitat restoration and ways to incorporate service learning projects into their work.

18.     National Energy Education Development (NEED) for Educators

July 11-15 - Hyannis, Massachusetts; July 17-21 - Galveston, Texas; July 25-29 - Long Beach, California

 

The NEED Conferences for Educators train teachers to incorporate energy programs into their classroom and extracurricular activities. Includes a one-day field experience, allowing an "up-close" view of a variety of energy topics. Three graduate credits to participating educators.

19.     Teacher-to-Teacher Summer Workshops

June 21-23  - Denver, Colorado; June 28-30 - Portland, Oregon; July 6-8 - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; July 12-14 - Orlando, Florida; July 21-23 - Anaheim, California; July 28-30 - St. Louis, Missouri; August 2-4, Boston, Massachusetts

 

Free workshops offered by the U.S. Department of Education where teachers can hear from their colleagues about research-based practices and effective methods of using data to inform instruction that have been successfully applied in the classroom. The workshops are designed by teachers for teachers, and apply to diverse groups of students. There is no registration fee for the summer workshops and the Department is covering hotel costs for two nights and will provide a travel stipend.
