CALL FOR NOMINATIONS FOR 2004 NAAEE AWARDS
Submission Deadline: June 15, 2004

The Awards Committee of the North American Association for Environmental
Education (NAAEE) announces its Call for Nominations for the prestigious
annual awards that will be presented this year in Biloxi, Mississippi at the
Association's conference in early November. June 15th is the deadline for
submitting your nomination for the 2004 awards.

This is your opportunity to recognize individuals and organizations that
excel in EE by nominating those who deserve wider recognition for their
accomplishments.

Local, Regional and Global Levels; Organizations at the Local, Regional and

1.  3D LIFE ADVENTURES ACTION GRANTS
Deadline:  Ongoing

3D Life Adventures is a nonprofit educational organization that has three
fundamental themes: nature, culture and community. Its mission is to build
and sustain a community of caring and resilient individuals who appreciate,
celebrate and protect both natural and cultural diversity. The
organization's Action Grants provide up to $500 and consulting to support
student-led initiatives related to the environment or culture.

2.  NC EE CENTERS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION GRANTS
Application Deadline:  July 1, 2004

Grants of up to $10,000 are now available to North Carolina Environmental
Education Centers for projects that promote public awareness and education
about preventing polluted runoff. The grants are the result of a partnership
between the Environmental Education Fund, the NC Association of
Environmental Education Centers, the DENR Division of Water Quality, and the
Office of Environmental Education, and utilize funding from the US EPA Clean
Water Act Section 319 grant. NC Environmental Education Centers listed on
the DENR Office of Environmental Education Web site are eligible to apply
for the ten grants that will be awarded the first year of this initiative.
Grants of less than $10,000 will be considered.

3.  PRESIDENTIAL FREEDOM SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
Application Deadline:  July 1, 2004

Two students from every high school in the United States are eligible to
receive $1,000 Presidential Freedom Scholarships in recognition of their
outstanding service to the community. This annual college scholarship
program is administered by the Corporation for National and Community
Service's Learn and Serve America program and provides half of the award,
which must be matched with $500 from a community organization, civic group,
or business and secured for the student by his or her high school.

4.  A+ FOR ENERGY GRANT PROGRAM FOR CALIFORNIA CLASSROOMS
Application Deadline:  June 30, 2004

New grant program from BP to recognize instructional creativity by awarding
$2 million in grants to California K-12 educators who teach students about
energy and energy conservation. Presented directly to teachers who submit
creative classroom, after-school, extra-curricular or summer activities
focused on energy education and/or energy conservation, the A+ for Energy
grant amounts will equal $5,000 or $10,000. Winning teachers will also
receive a NEED scholarship to attend a five-day energy training conference
in Long Beach in July 2005. BP is partnering with the National Energy
Education Development (NEED) Project to support energy education in
California. The NEED scholarship will cover travel, meals and lodging
expenses in addition to a NEED Science of Energy Kit valued at $500 that
includes helpful classroom tools and materials to help educators teach
energy.

5.  DO SOMETHING BRICK AWARDS
Application Deadline:  November 1, 2004

A program of Do Something, the BRICK Awards were created to recognize and
financially support outstanding young people, to create a network of young
community leaders across the United States, and to inspire other young
people to become active in their communities. The program honors and funds
the efforts of dynamic leaders age 18 and under who have devised and
implemented innovative solutions to problems in their local communities in
the areas of community building, health, and the environment. Each BRICK
winner receives a $5,000 higher education scholarship, a $5,000 grant for
continued community work, pro bono services, and other support and
recognition. Applicants must be 18 years old or younger on April 14, 2005,
to be eligible.

6.  EECOM 2004 CONFERENCE - CANADA
August 19-22, 2004 - Vancouver, British Columbia

Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM)
Conference: Developmental Education for a Sustainable Future weaves together
a number of important themes relevant to environmental educators across the
continent. The conference will focus on emergent themes related to both the
development of social and educational capacity, while allowing for the
thoughtful analysis of environmental and sustainability issues of critical
importance to educators.

7.  CANADIAN BROWNFIELDS NETWORK (CBN)

A national network for brownfield practitioners and stakeholders, CBN's
objective is to accelerate brownfield redevelopment in Canada, thereby
improving a community's environmental and economic performance. Lead

8.  EARTHCARE CANADA

EarthCARE is an activity-based, curriculum-aligned program designed to
develop students and staff as environmental stewards. Includes lesson plans,

9.  ECO'TUDE:  CHANGING YOUR SCHOOL'S ECOLOGICAL ATTITUDE - AUSTRALIA

Eco'tude is an online resource that allows Australian students to consider
their school's environmental impact, empowers them to take action and change
their schools attitude.  Students can determine the size of their school's
ecological footprint.

11.  CORRELATING YOUR EE PROGRAM TO THE STATE CURRICULUM STANDARDS -
COLORADO
June 16, 2004 - Colorado Springs, Colorado

Are you maximizing the opportunities for classroom teachers to effectively
use your EE program or materials? Here's your chance to find out how to
create links to the standards and raise their value even more. This seminar
is highly interactive and great fun (believe it or not!) You'll get some
insight into standards-based education that you may have never expected.
You'll see how easy it is to make the correlations an easy-to- find
marketing tool for your program when teachers access CAEE's statewide EE
information clearinghouse. And you'll be given some time to actually try
your hand at creating correlations between your program and the state

12.  SUMMER ISLANDWOOD GRADUATE PROGRAM - WASHINGTON
Summer 2004 - Bainbridge, Washington

In partnership with the University of Washington, the IslandWood Graduate
Program is a unique immersion experience in learning and teaching at one of
the nation's most innovative and sustainable campuses. Graduate studies
include ecologically based courses in education and professionally mentored
teaching of children from urban Seattle and rural Kitsap County in this
4-day residential program. Using cultural and natural communities as a
context for learning, graduate students learn to teach children the
importance of environmental and community stewardship. During the 10-month
residency on IslandWood's 255-acre campus, graduate students complete 38
credits and earn a Certificate in Education for Environment and Community
from the University of Washington. During a second year, graduate students
can choose to complete one of several Master's Degrees at the University of
Washington or Master in Teaching/Teacher Certification from City University.

13.  INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE FOR BIODIVERSITY EDUCATION - FLORIDA
October 11-16, 2004 - Orlando, Florida

World Wildlife Fund and Disney's Animal Kingdom are looking for 40 leaders
to participate in "The International Leadership Institute for Biodiversity
Education " to be held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando Florida,
October 11-16, 2004. The institute is open to leaders from across the
country who work at the local, state or national level, have a broad reach,
and experience in developing programs and creating partnerships. There is no
cost for institute tuition, educational materials, and housing during the
institute.

14.  BIG RIVER EDUCATOR WORKSHOPS - WISCONSIN AND MINNESOTA
June and July, 2004 - Wisconsin & Minnesota

Offered free to educators (grades 5-12) in southeastern Minnesota and
southwestern Wisconsin in June and July.  Presented by Living Lands & Waters
(LL&W) and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources as one and two-day
learning experiences aboard LL&W's floating classroom.  Graduate credit and
re-certification units are available.

15.  PROJECT WET FACILITATOR TRAINING - CALIFORNIA
June 30, 2004 - El Segundo, California

Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) seminar for K-12 teachers, offers
new activities to use in teaching science, math, language arts, social
studies and environmental studies.  Participants will be trained in the
basics of how to use Project WET materials as well as in facilitation and
organization skills.

16.  ECOLOGY EXPLORERS:  BIRD DIVERSITY AND URBAN HABITAT - ARIZONA
June 14-25, 2004 - Tempe, Arizona

Ecology Explorers encourages teachers and students to learn about their
urban environment through engaging in scientific inquiry and linking with
the Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research Project. Teachers
can participate in summer internships and school year workshops.

17.  SUMMER ECOLOGICAL FIELD STUDIES - ONLINE
June 14 - July 23, 2004 - Online

This on-line course is designed for educators of children in grades 6-12 to
learn and practice basic ecological field techniques and integrate them into
their instruction. Conducted during June and July, this course focuses on
summer field ecological studies including stream, forest, plant and bird
studies. All studies will be completed outdoors in your local environment. A
wide variety of field study techniques will be presented and the
participants will share the results of the studies. This course is a great
opportunity to meet and interact with educators throughout the USA and the
