**NAAEE Announcement**
1. First NAAEE Annual EE Research Symposium
Sharing our Research Interests, Accomplishments and Plans

7:00 PM - 10:00 PM  November 5 and
8:00 AM -  5:00 PM November 6

The NAAEE Research Commission is pleased to invite you to Biloxi, Mississippi for the First Annual NAAEE Pre-conference EE Research Symposium. The annual symposium, unlike the more practitioner-oriented sessions of the general NAAEE conference and the associated pre-conference workshops will focus on research discussions by and for researchers. The symposium offers opportunities to discuss a range of research programs and evaluation studies that range from quantitative and mixed methods approaches through a number of qualitative traditions such as ethnography, phenomenology, narrative/autobiography, and participation action research and perspectives from interpretive and critical to postmodern, feminist, gendered and cultural studies.

Costs: $195 for NAAEE members / $250 for non-members includes lunch on Saturday.

1. DISNEYHAND TEACHER AWARDS
Nomination Deadline: October 15, 2004
The DisneyHand Teacher Awards honor full-time creative, inspiring teachers across the United States who showcase creativity in the classroom and assist in developing creative teaching strategies in their school districts. Teachers can be nominated by students, former students, students' parents, principals, or members of the community. Honorees and their respective schools will receive grants from the Walt Disney Company. Honorees will also participate in professional development and recognition events.

2. WHALE TAIL GRANTS PROGRAM - CALIFORNIA
Application Deadline: December 10, 2004
The California Coastal Commission's Whale Tail Grants Program for schools and nonprofits to apply for funding to support programs that encourage people to value and take action to improve the health of California's coast, marine life, or inland watersheds, with an emphasis on reaching underserved students and members of the public. Educational beach maintenance and coastal habitat restoration programs are also eligible. Applicants may request any amount up to $50,000, and 25-50% of the funding will be allocated in small grants under $10,000. $413,500 will be distributed.

3. DO SOMETHING BRICK AWARDS ANNOUNCES NEW CATEGORY
Deadline: November 1, 2004
The BRICK Award program has added a new category to the BRICK Awards for young leaders age 19-25! The 19-25 category will have 6 finalists and 3 winners. The 18 and under category will still have 12 finalists and 6 winners. The Do Something BRICK Awards program honors and funds the efforts of dynamic leaders age 25 and under who have devised and implemented innovative solutions to problems in their local communities in the areas of community building, health and the environment. Each BRICK winner in the "18 and under" category receives a $5,000 higher education scholarship and a $5,000 grant for continued community work. Winners in the "19-25" category each receive a $10,000 grant for continued community work. All winners receive engraved bricks, pro bono services, and other support and recognition.

4. YOUTH VENTURE
Youth Venture provides seed money grants of up to $1,000 for new youth-created, youth-led, sustainable ventures that benefit the community. Youth ages 12-20 who want to start a new ongoing environmental club or organization can get guidance on how to plan, organize, and launch their venture, along with funds for start-up expenses. 5. AUSTRALIAN RESEARCH INSTITUTE IN EDUCATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY (ARIES)
ARIES is the first national institute devoted to the research of education for sustainability and will undertake a range of research projects aimed at better understanding methods of motivating and engaging organisations, governments, communities, and individuals into making changes for environmental sustainability.

6. SCHOLARSHIPS AT SCHUMACHER COLLEGE - UK
The College has Educational Foundation of America (EFA) Scholarships available for the following two courses:
HOLISTIC SCIENCE (October 3-22 2004) with Brian Goodwin, Stephan Harding, Arthur Zajonc, Craig Holdredge and Francoise Wemelsfelder.
FUTURE SENSE (November 7-26 2004) with Mary Midgley, John Lash, Jules Cashford and Anne Baring. The College is located in the UK, but these Scholarships are available to US citizens only and are worth up to 80% of course fees.

7. ENVIRONMENTAL CAREERS CONFERENCE - VIDEO BROADCAST
October 5, 2004
The Green Careers Conference will take place via a live video teleconference broadcast to provide information pertaining to sustainable careers. Eight environmental employers on two panels will provide inside information on how to get into a great career that sustains our environment.

8. WATERSHED ACADEMY TRAINING CDS
Watershed Academy is offering a free CD version of the online watershed training program. Each module is interactive and written in a style to optimize understanding by general audiences. Hands on the Land (HOL) is a network of field classrooms stretching across America from Alaska to Florida and is sponsored by Partners in Resource Education, a collaboration of five Federal agencies, a non-profit foundation, schools, and other private sector partners. HOL provides a national network of field classrooms to enhance kindergarten through high school student-learning. 11. EPA PRESENTS "AFTER THE STORM"
The Environmental Protection Agency is airing a half-hour television special about watersheds and stormwater runoff on The Weather Channel, Saturday, September 18, 2004 at 8:00 pm and 11:00 pm EST. 13. AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY (AMNH) SCIENCE BULLETINS
The AMNH Science Bulletin Website has been updated to provide news on recent discoveries in biodiversity, Earth sciences and astrophysics. The bulletins present current science news stories through video stories, 3-D graphics, and interactive satellite data visualizations.

15. THE COLUMBIA RIVER VIRTUAL FIELD TRIP: AN AMAZING WATERSHED JOURNEY

16. ASK DOCTOR GLOBAL CHANGE
A reference service provided by Global Change Research Information Office (GCRIO) that assists in finding information and data relevant to global environmental change. 17. WWF SEEKING EDUCATORS TO PILOT TEST CURRICULUM
The World Wildlife Fund is finalizing the latest Windows on the Wild curriculum guide, "Building Better Communities" and are looking for formal and nonformal educators to help pilot test activities. Pilot testers will receive a free copy of Smart Consumers: An Educator's Guide to Exploring Consumer Issues and the Environment or another Windows on the Wild publication of their choice.

18. CYBERSCHOOLBUS SEEKING TEACHERS TO REVIEW CONTENT
