The bi-weekly email bulletin provided by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), with funding from the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP).

**NAAEE Announcement**
NAAEE 2004 Conference scholarship applications are now being accepted for three categories:


a. Diversity Scholarship -- to assist individuals representing minority groups from urban areas. International and Spanish-speaking educators are encouraged to apply, valued at $350.00.
b. College Students Scholarship -- to support deserving full time junior, senior (3rd or 4th year student), or graduate students with commitment to environmental education, valued at $210.00.
c. Mississippi Educator Scholarship -- to recognize Mississippi teachers that excel in the classroom and to MS environmental educators that are in need of financial assistance, valued at $330.00.


All partial scholarships cover full conference registration and the appropriate annual NAAEE membership dues.

Deadline for Applications is October 15, 2004 and notification is October 30, 2004.

3. ESTUARYLIVE CELEBRATES - ONLINE FIELD TRIP
Setpember 21-25, 2004 - Online
Celebrate National Estuaries Day with EstuaryLive, an interactive field trip of estuaries over the Internet. September 21-22 special fieldtrips to the Rachel Carson Reserve in Beaufort, North Carolina will be covering special topics that support the science curriculum. September 23-24 will feature live internet field trips to seven different estuaries around the United States.

4. ALTWHEELS FESTIVAL - MASSACHUSETTS
September 18-19, 2004 - Brookline, Massachusetts
New England's largest annual alternative transportation festival has many areas designed for educators and kids including environmental curriculum from the Museum of Science, Tufts, the NE Aquarium, and MIT as well as a full set of panels and lawn show featuring all types of alternative transportation vehicles available. A breakout session on September 20th will be held at the Museum to discuss creating a more sustainable transportation vision for New England with a focused session on the topic of education.

5. TEACHING ACROSS DISCIPLINES - NORTH CAROLINA
October 18, 2004 - Research Triangle Park, North Carolina
Teaching Across Disciplines Using Environmental Health workshop for K-12 teachers. Explore classroom materials that use environmental health to teach across disciplines. Receive curricular materials that address North Carolina Education Standards and teacher substitute reimbursement. Choose the workshop that best meets your grade level: Grades K-4, Grades 5-8 and Grades 9-12. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will receive a Certificate of Participation (8 hours).

6. UTAH ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE

9. 2004 MISSOURI EE CAMPUS CONFERENCE
October 29-31, 2004 - Columbia, Missouri
The 2004 "EE Campus" will have a stronger focus on professional development providing workshops that can be used for continuing education, college credit, or Category I & II of the EE Certification program. Attending the whole conference counts toward Category III - Knowledge of Additional Resources. The Share Fair will feature various curriculum materials and professional development workshops. The Regional Partners Dinner will provide opportunities to foster partnerships among EE providers in each region of the state.

10. NIW 2004 WORKSHOP - MICHIGAN
November 16-20, 2004 - Grand Rapids, Michigan
National Association for Interpretation (NAI) National Interpreters Workshop (NIW) "An Interpreter’s Voyage". Workshop participants will include natural and cultural heritage interpreters; managers from federal, state, and private organizations; tourism professionals; commercial vendors and interpretation students.

11. WIDENING THE CLASSROOM WALLS - WASHINGTON
October 22-23, 2004 - Seattle, Washington
Widening the Classroom Walls: Schoolyard Habitats and Urban Wildlife. Woodland Park Zoo and National Wildlife Federation workshop provides an opportunity for school communities (students, educators, administration and community members) to learn the benefits of and steps involved in creating a Schoolyard Habitats site.

12. AUTUMN ECOLOGICAL FIELD STUDIES COURSE - ONLINE
September 13 - December 17, 2004 - Online
Montana State University Online course is designed for educators of children in grades 6-12 to learn and practice basic ecological field study techniques and integrate them into their instruction. The course focuses on autumn ecological field studies including: forest, plant landscape, human impact and bird studies. All studies will be completed outdoors in your local environment. A wide variety of field study techniques will be presented and the participants will share the results of the studies. Basic ecological concepts are presented in the context of the field studies. Participants will have many opportunities to share their views on a variety of topics related to the environment and education. 3 Graduate credits through Montana State University. 14. DR. WILLIAM B. STAPP HONORED - MICHIGAN

An Ann Arbor nature area will be named after Dr. William B. Stapp to honor his life and impact who founded Ann Arbor Public School's Outdoor Education program in 1963. There will be a formal dedication of the Stapp Nature Area on Friday September 17, 2004 at the Leslie Science Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan at 3pm, followed by a reception.

15. WWF ADVENTURES YOUNG EXPLORERS IN THE AMAZON
This World Wildlife Fund site features the expedition highlights of Nick News and the Young Explorers into the Amazon. Students can learn about the rainforest and ways to help preserve the Amazon; experience the adventures of the explorers through their "Jungle Notes"; and play the "Piranha Chase" and learn about the natural treasures of the Amazon.

17. NONFORMAL EE PROGRAMS – GUIDELINES FOR EXCELLENCE
Nonformal Environmental Education Programs – Guidelines for Excellence comprises a set of recommendations for developing and administering high quality nonformal environmental education programs. The guidelines describe six key characteristics that can help guide the program development process: Needs Assessment, Organizational Needs and Capacities, Program Scope and Structure, Program Delivery Resources, Program Quality and Appropriateness, and Evaluation. Each key characteristic is supported by a series of guidelines and indicators that provide greater detail. 18. KIND NEWS
Kids in Nature's Defense (KIND) monthly newspaper from the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education. Features articles, stories, and activities that help teach children about people, animals, and the environment. Students also can visit the website for related games and activities. September through May (monthly) subscription is $30 and includes 32 copies of one of three editions (grades K–2; 3–4; or 5–6), a teachers guide and an annual resource book of reproducible worksheets, calendar pages, and other materials.

20. JOURNEY OF THE LOGGERHEAD: INTERACTIVE DVD ON MARINE TURTLES
Available September 2004 Environmental Media designed and filmed this interactive DVD in the company of countless staff and volunteers of local nesting beach monitoring programs, domestic and international agencies, colleges and universities, aquaria, nature centers, and rehabilitation programs. This interactive DVD contains GIS data, satellite tracking information, still photographs, extensive interviews, and a 26-minute video about the loggerhead and other marine turtle species.

The Indian Environmental Society (IES) conference purpose is to evaluate the steps taken as a follow-up of Tbilisi at regional, national and global levels to strengthen EE and also to appraise the activities and success of programs developed and implemented on environmental education in the last three decades. Topics will include: environmental education in formal and non-formal education systems, EE and trade, media, case studies, success stories, biodiversity conservation, eco-restoration and environmental legislation and EE.
