1. ADOBE COMMUNITY ACTION GRANTS
Deadlines: December 31, 2004; March 31, 2005; June 30, 2005; September 30, 2005
Adobe Systems awards one-time grants for one year general operating and program support ranging from $5,000-$20,000. Focus areas include Creativity in Education and Commitment to Community. Eligible non-profit organizations and schools must be located in one of the following areas: San Jose/Silicon Valley, California; Seattle/King County, Washington; and Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

2. IGNITING CREATIVE ENERGY CHALLENGE
Deadline: February 19, 2005
Johnson Controls and the National Energy Foundation (NEF) educational competition designed to encourage students to learn more about energy and the environment. Students are asked to submit entries that reflect the competition theme, Igniting Creative Energy, and demonstrate an understanding of what an individual, family, or group can do to make a difference in their home, school, or community in the form of science projects, essays, stories, artwork, photographs, music, video, or website projects. The Challenge is open to all students in grades K-12 in the U.S. and Canada, excluding Quebec.

3. RAINFOREST HEROES HOLIDAY POSTER CONTEST
Deadline: Friday, December 8, 2004
Rainforest Heroes Annual Save the Rainforest Holiday Poster Contest involves students in a positive and empowering experience that can impact environmental policy. The student with the winning poster will receive a $50 gift certificate and the winning student's teacher will receive a $100 gift certificate.

4. CALIFORNIA COASTAL ART & POETRY CONTEST
Deadline: January 31, 2005
The California Coastal Commission invites California K-12 students to submit art or poetry with a coastal theme. Up to 8 winners will receive $100 certificates to an art supply or book store, and each winner's teacher will receive a $40 certificate for educational supplies.

5. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS AWARDS
Deadline: February 14, 2005
A hands-on science competition for middle school students that encourages community partnerships. Participating in the Christopher Columbus Awards program is a cross-curricular activity that meets science education standards. Students work in teams with the help of an adult coach, to identify an issue they care about and use science and technology to develop an innovative solution. Eight finalist teams will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Disney World to attend National Championship Week, plus a $200 grant to further develop their ideas. Two teams will receive a $2,000 U.S. Savings Bond and a plaque for each team member along with a plaque for their school. One team will receive the $25,000 grant as seed money to help bring its idea to life in the community.

6. VOLVO ADVENTURE AWARD
Deadline: January 31, 2005
In collaboration with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Volvo Adventure Award is an opportunity for 10-16 year olds, working in groups of two to five, and actively involved in devising and managing existing and new environmental action projects. This year there is a North American regional competition open to any environmental project working with young people. Projects can involve improving the situation for animals, improving water quality or using energy resources more wisely. Award includes an all expenses paid trip to Sweden to present project to an international jury and present the agenda for action to UNEP.

7. APPLIED ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAM EVALUATION ~ ONLINE
February 21 - April 29, 2005 ~ Online
New 10-week online course offered through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The course is designed to assist environmental educators and natural resource professionals in evaluating their education programs. Participants have the opportunity to apply skills in designing evaluation tools such as questionnaires, observation forms, and interview and focus group guides. This course was developed as a cooperative effort between the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) National Conservation Training Center. Participants may obtain three undergraduate or graduate credits from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. All participants, regardless of location, are eligible for the in-state tuition rate. The course is also offered as a non-credit workshop for those who are not seeking college credit. 8. NPS / NRID AIR QUALITY WORKSHOP ~ TEXAS
March 29-30, 2005 ~ Dallas, Texas
The National Park Service, Natural Resource Information Division (NRID) and the Air Resources Division (ARD) workshop, entitled “Communicating Critical Air Resource Issues in National Parks.” The focus will be on bringing air quality specialists and resource managers together with interpreters and educators to collaborate efforts on conveying complex air quality issues to the public. Experienced park interpreters, air quality educators, research scientists and academic scholars will speak about several important topics including climate change, ecological effects of air pollution, air quality and visibility, and the night sky. The workshop will precede the NSTA Convention in Dallas, March 31-April 3. To enable NPS employees to attend this important training, ARD will reimburse the employee's home park for personnel services up to $750 for each participant attending the workshop. However, it will be the park's requirement to pay for all travel costs associated with their employee attending this workshop. 9. FUNDAMENTALS OF ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION ~ ONLINE
February 7 - April 15, 2005 ~ Online
A 10-week online course developed by the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) in collaboration with national EE experts. Appropriate for both classroom teachers and for non-formal educators who work with students and/or teachers. Participants may obtain three undergraduate or graduate credits from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. All students, regardless of location, are eligible for the in-state tuition rate. The course is also offered at a reduced cost for those who are not interested in obtaining college credit. This online course provides educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate quality environmental education into their instruction. Participants discuss the history, definition, and goals of environmental education; develop an understanding of the professional roles and instructional methods of environmental educators; and interact with other educators from across the country. 11. STUDY BOLSTERS RESEARCH THAT EE HELPS STUDENTS WITH ADHD
"A Potential Natural Treatment for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: Evidence from a National Study" by Frances Kuo, PhD, and Andrea Faber Taylor, PhD, of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign shows that hands-on structured outdoor activities improve behavior and produces positive results for students with ADHD. 16. MINNESOTA REPORT CARD ON ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY
Over 80% of Minnesota adults consider the environment when voting. The Second Minnesota Report Card 2004, documents the results of the second statewide survey concerning environmental literacy of adults in Minnesota. This report card examines changes in the intervening period since the 2002 Minnesota Report Card, with results also compared to the national and Pennsylvania report cards. The Second Report Card addresses adults' knowledge about, attitudes toward, and behaviors related to the environment, with an emphasis on water issues.
