1. SUMMER OPPORTUNITY FOR HS STUDENTS
Application Deadline: February 15, 2005
The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program, sponsored by the American
Fisheries Society designed to stimulate interest in careers in fisheries
science and management among groups underrepresented in the fisheries
professions, including minorities and women. Students (Grades 10-12)
spend 8 weeks in the summer working alongside their mentor who is a
fisheries professional in their local community. Participants receive a
$3,000 scholarship paid out in 6 installments over the summer months.

2. PRESIDENTIAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS FOR TEACHERS
Deadline: May 2, 2005
This program, established by the White House and sponsored by the
National Science Foundation, identifies outstanding K-12 mathematics and
science teachers in each state and the four U.S. jurisdictions. Each
Presidential Awardee will receive a $10,000 award from the National
Science Foundation, gifts from donors, and will be invited, with a
guest, to attend recognition events in Washington, D.C. in March 2006.

3. ENVIRONMENT LEADERSHIP AWARD NAMED FOR FIRST RECIPIENT

The University of Virginia’s Institute for Environmental Negotiation has
established the Gerald P. McCarthy Award for Leadership in Environmental
Conflict Resolution in honor of Gerald P. McCarthy, executive director
of the Virginia Environmental Endowment for his leadership in fostering
environmental mediation and protection of Virginia’s environment. It
will be awarded annually to recognize an individual, organization,
agency, educational institutions or community that fosters collaboration
and has taken a leadership role in preserving and protecting Virginia’s

5. BIOREGIONAL OUTDOOR ED CONFERENCE ~ UTAH
March 4-6, 2006 ~ Utah
5th Annual Colorado Plateau Bioregional Outdoor Education Conference
theme is "Stories From and About the Colorado Plateau". Presenting over
20 workshops that will give K-8 teachers numerous ideas for lessons they
can incorporate into their classroom immediately following the workshop.
Featured presenter Uma Krishnaswami, author of numerous children's books
as well as a book for teachers, "Beyond the Field Trip: Teaching and
Learning in Public Places" will be presenting "Writing In and Of Place"
on Friday night.

6. CERTIFIED INTERPRETIVE GUIDE TRAINING ~ WASHINGTON
March 20-23, 2005 ~ Bellingham, Washington
The National Association for Interpretation (NAI) professional
certification program to recognize individuals who exhibit knowledge and
skills necessary to assure quality interpretive services to all
audiences. The Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) program is one level
in that program. NAI Region 10 (Pacific Northwest) will host a 32-hour
CIG Workshop immediately preceding the Region's Spring Workshop at
Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.

7. MAEE ANNUAL CONFERENCE ~ MINNESOTA
April 8-9, 2005 ~ Finland, Minnesota
The Minnesota Association for Environmental Education (MAEE) 12th Annual
conference. MAEE is gearing up for more than 150 participants at the
Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center (ELC) with two symposia, two
panels, 25 concurrent sessions, a job opportunities table, a silent
auction, and exhibits. The organization offers scholarships for teachers
and a low student rate.

10. NATIONAL EE WEEK
April 10 - 16, 2005
National Environmental Education Week is a full week of educational
preparation for Earth Day and will involve some 400,000 educators and 15
million students. Educators can participate by conducting environmental
education programming during the Week. Check out the "To-Do List" and
"Tools and Links" sections on the site for suggested activities, ideas,
and resources to involve, educate, and inspire. EE Week is coordinated
by the National Environmental Education & Training Foundation (NEETF)in

21. CHILDHOOD EE MATERIALS - RFP
Deadline: February 1, 2005
Formal Request for Proposals for Childhood Environmental Educational
Materials - Environmental Department The City of Laredo is now accepting
proposals, from qualified firms/individuals interested in providing
services to produce early childhood environmental educational materials.
The City of Laredo and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have
partnered to create an educational packet for environmental education of
children ages 3 to 5. This will consist of creation of a musical compact
disk with environmental education based songs and creation of a
supplemental lesson packet that will include various environmental
education curriculums. All materials will be in English and Spanish. All
songs, graphic art, text, etc. will become public domain upon completion
of the contract.
