News from the Community

Dr. John Disinger has been diagnosed with Meckel's Carcinoma, a rare form of skin cancer. He has had chemotherapy which has not been effective and is currently undergoing radiation at the James Center. Apparently it is a very aggressive form of cancer and they are hopeful that radiation will slow it down. He is currently in room 755 at the James but may be transferred soon to Doan Hall for rehabilitation.

NAAEE is seeking reviewers of proposals for sessions at the 34th Annual Conference. Selected reviewers will evaluate proposals on-line from May 23 -April 6.

1. A+ FOR ENERGY GRANT PROGRAM FOR CA TEACHERS
Deadline: April 4, 2005 ~ California Teachers
The A+ for Energy grant will award either $5,000 or $10,000 directly to K-12 teachers in California to teach energy related topics. Both teachers and school administrators may apply.
Applications are available via the Internet or by calling (714) 228-6760. The submission deadline is April 4, 2005 and winners will be announced by June 7, 2005.

2. YOUTH COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS
Deadline: April 1, 2005
High School Seniors can be nominated for Hitachi Yoshiyama Youth Award for Exemplary Service to the Community. The award recognizes exemplary service and community involvement, and includes a gift of $5,000, to be dispensed over two years.

3. ALASKA CONSERVATION AWARDS
Nomination Deadline: March 15, 2005
Alaska Conservation Foundation Annual Conservation Awards to honor individuals with a strong commitment to protecting Alaska's environment. Self nominations are accepted.

4. SEJ AWARDS REPORTING ON THE ENVIRONMENT
Deadline: April 1, 2005
Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) annual journalism contest honors outstanding environmental work appearing in newspapers, magazines, newsletters, online services, radio, television, in nine categories, each with a $1,000 prize. Submitted work must have been aired or published between March 1, 2004, and February 28, 2005.

5. GLORIA BARRON PRIZE FOR YOUNG HEROES
Nomination Deadline: April 30, 2005
The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes seeks nominations for its 2005 awards. The Barron Prize recognizes young people ages 8 to 18 in the U.S. and Canada who have shown leadership and courage in public service to people and our planet. Each year, ten winners each receive $2,000 to support their service work or higher education. Half of each year's winners are chosen for their work on behalf of the environment.

6. FEDERAL JUNIOR DUCK STAMP CONSERVATION AND DESIGN

7. ARIES REVIEW OF WHOLE-SCHOOL SUSTAINABILITY ~ AUSTRALIA
Australian Research Institute in Education for Sustainability (ARIES) releases study: Whole-school Approaches to Sustainability: An international review of whole-school sustainability programs, commissioned by the Australian Government. The study documents the experiences, achievements and lessons learned from nationwide, whole-school initiatives developing around the world. International initiatives such as Enviroschools, Eco-schools, Learnscapes and Green Schools were reviewed to assist in identifying key features and critical success factors which characterise a Sustainable School.

8. CORRECTION! BIOREGIONAL OUTDOOR ED CONFERENCE ~ UTAH
Correction: Date for this conference is March 4-6, 2005
Utah 5th Annual Colorado Plateau Bioregional Outdoor Education Conference theme is "Stories From and About the Colorado Plateau". Presenting over 20 workshops that will give K-8 teachers numerous ideas for lessons they can incorporate into their classroom immediately following the workshop. Featured presenter Uma Krishnaswami, author of numerous children's books as well as a book for teachers, "Beyond the Field Trip: Teaching and Learning in Public Places" will be presenting "Writing In and Of Place" on Friday night.

10. PROFESSIONAL RESIDENCY IN EE (PREE) ~ WYOMING
The January issue of Audubon Magazine highlighted Teton Science Schools Professional residency in Environmental Education (PREE) program. The PREE experience is a one-year graduate-level program in the content and methodology of environmental education and interpretation. The program includes courses in natural sciences, education, as well as extended practicum experiences in the outdoors, classroom and community.

11. SUMMER EXPERIENCES FOR K-12 TEACHERS ~ NEW YORK
Application Deadline: February 15, 2005
Ecology Research Experiences for Teachers: A Summer Program of Independent Research in Ecology for K-12 Teachers Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Millbrook, New York. Teachers will participate in the activities of the IES Research Experiences for Undergraduate program, including seminars, workshops, a case study of a regional environmental issue, and a career forum. Seven week course and an additional day during the school year is designed to be flexible to accommodate school calendars and other summer activities.

14. ISLANDWOOD GRADUATE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION ~ WASHINGTON

16. GRAND CANYON FALL SEMESTER ~ ARIZONA
Fall 2005 ~ Flagstaff, Arizona
Northern Arizona University program for a small group of outstanding students (about 25), preferably from undergraduate Honors programs, with widely varying disciplinary and personal interests, to join a strong and dedicated teaching faculty of NAU professors, museum curators, NPS rangers, artists, writers, photographers and Native American leaders to study the Grand Canyon and southern Colorado Plateau region from the perspectives of the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. Each student usually takes 15 to 18 credit hours. The courses are designed to be easily transferable back to students' home institutions.

19. INTERNATIONAL MIGRATORY BIRD DAY 2005

22. WORLD WIDE BIOME PROJECT
The World Wide Biome Project is designed to have students learn about ecosystems in their locale and share their findings with students from around the world through the medium kids use - the internet. The prime focus of the site is to have students/classes do an evaluation of a habitat in their biome and send the data in to the World Wide Biome Project. Their data is converted into a series of web pages for them. This allows students to learn from other projects that students like themselves have created.
