News from the Community
=====================
We at NAAEE wish to celebrate the life of Senator Gaylord Nelson and the efforts he made to make our nation aware of the need to protect the environment. The Founder of Earth Day in 1969 has by his actions and commitment provided us with a good foundation that needs to be built upon.

It is important that each of us continue to keep alive Senator Nelson's efforts to preserve and protect our environment by "thinking globally and acting locally." Our individual efforts in our homes and communities are important in celebrating Earth Day, every day. He has been a model statesman for the environment.

We ask our members and any person interested in the environment to join together with NAAEE to continue his dream. Thus environmental education that creates a citizenry who are critical thinkers and problem solvers is an important goal. It is our hope that each of us will now have more resolve to advance Senator Nelson's work and trust this will propel us to new heights in the field.

2. JULY 31 DEADLINE FOR DIVERSITY AND STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR NAAEE
Diversity Scholarship – Scholarships are awarded to individuals from minority cultures, or to international and Spanish-speaking participants. The Scholarship has a value of US$395 to cover the cost of conference registration fees and a one-year professional membership. The awards will be given to applicants in exchange for approximately four hours of work at the conference (assisting with registration, etc.). Priority will be given to those persons who have never attended an NAAEE conference, have not had a previous NAAEE scholarship, and who will be conference presenters.

Student Scholarship (The Stapp Fund) -- The Stapp Fund was established in 2001 in honor of NAAEE international leader Dr. Bill Stapp (1930-2001) to help students from around the world attend NAAEE's annual conference. The scholarships are made possible through generous donations from members and from the Silent and Live Auctions held each year at the Conference. This year, NAAEE is pleased to acknowledge a significant contribution from the Global Network of Environmental Education Centers to the Stapp Fund.

NAAEE is offering a limited number of student scholarships, valued at US$400, awarded based on academic qualifications. To be eligible for a scholarship you must be a full time junior, senior (3rd or 4th year student), or graduate student at the time of the conference. Special consideration will be given to students who are conference presenters. Please note that the scholarship is awarded on a reimbursement basis.
