5. BUILD AN OUTDOOR CLASSROOM AT YOUR SCHOOL GRANTS
Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper and
National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine are offering this
outdoor classroom grant program to help schools improve their science
curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the
traditional classroom. This Grant program is for outdoor classroom
proposals by K-12 public schools in the United States. Grants up to
$2,000 will be awarded to at least 100 schools and grants for up to
$20,000 may be awarded to schools or school districts with major outdoor
classroom projects. Proposals are reviewed three times a year.

6. FALL 2006 FELLOWSHIPS FOR GRADUATE ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY
Application Deadline: October 18, 2005
EPA Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships For Graduate
Environmental Study for master's and doctoral level students in the
environmental fields of study. The fellowship provides up to $37,000 per
year of support for approximately 15 new fellowships.

7. S'WEST GIRLS COLLABORATIVE GRANTS ~ TX, LA, AR, OK, NM
Deadline: November 1, 2005
The Southwest Girls Collaborative is funded by a grant from the National
Science Foundation. This program provides small grants (up to $1000) to
individuals and groups working together to create a program to support
girls in science, math, technology, and engineering.

8. NEW EPA STAR FELLOWSHIPS
Application Deadline: October 18, 2005
Approximately 100 new fellowships will be awarded for research in
environmental fields of study through the EPA Science to Achieve Results
(STAR) program. The STAR program provides educational support for
full-time masters and doctoral level students who plan to pursue
environmental careers, with a focus on developing future leaders in
environmental science, education, assessment, and restoration efforts.

10. IDAHO EE ASSOCIATION RECRUITING SCHOOLS FOR EIC
Apply by: December 15, 2005
Idaho EE Association announces 12 schools from throughout the Greater
Yellowstone Ecosystem now have access to the innovative educational
approach, The EIC Model. This project is made possible by a two-year
grant from The Turner Foundation Inc. Selected teaching teams from four
schools each in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming will receive professional
development in The EIC Model. This will include a week-long training
institute, assistance with resource development, and evaluation services.

12. INSECTS IN THE CLASSROOM COURSE ~ ONLINE
Insects in the Classroom Online Course explores the use of insects as
teaching tools in K-12 education. Aligned with No Child Left Behind
standards, the course focuses on teaching science concepts and

15. NEW-CUE WRITERS' CONFERENCE ~ MAINE

The Fourth NEW-CUE Writers' Conference and Workshop in honor of Rachel
Carson will highlight the work of Henry David Thoreau. Featured speakers
for the event will include Lawrence Buell, Jane Brox, Jeffrey Cramer,

tidepool explorations, and visits to the Maine Botanical Gardens and the

16. GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
Deadline: November 1, 2005
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) invites
applications for Graduate Research Fellowships in the National Estuarine
Research Reserves System. This program funds high-quality research
focused on improving coastal zone management while providing students
with hands-on training in conducting ecological monitoring. Projects
must address coastal management issues that relate to non-point source
pollution, estuarine ecosystem restoration, biodiversity and effects of
invasive species, and sustaining estuarine ecosystems. The stipend
amount is $20,000.

17. ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY SEEKING ACTIVITIES
The Astronomical Society of the Pacific is beginning work on a national
professional development project to help small- to medium-sized nature

This month, the Information Exchange for Marine Educators e-newsletter
provides a list of hurricane and flood resources for teachers and
students. The newsletter from NOAA's National Marine Protected Areas
(MPA) Center always includes information about a myriad of different
educational programs and activities, funding sources, and professional

Created by scholars at the Center for Strategic and International
