This National Academy of Sciences booklet presents recommendations from the National Academies' many expert reports on climate change in an easy-to-read format. Tom Harten, a teacher with the CHESPAX environmental education program of the Calvert County Public Schools in Maryland, will be traveling to the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea, July 15-18, as a part of the PolarTREC program, a project that partners teachers with scientists conducting polar research in both the arctic and in Antarctica. Mr. Harten will be a participant in a project that will investigate the impact of climate change on seabirds nesting on these remote islands, a project funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation. Mr. Harten will be posting journal entries from the field as video and audio podcasts and answering questions from interested students and teachers.

"How Green is My Town?" is a grassroots effort to empower citizens and local decision makers to address the issues of climate change, sustainability, and environmental health at the local level. Population Connection announces the release of its new secondary-level curriculum, Earth Matters: Studies for Our Global Future, 3rd edition on CD-ROM. This new edition is completely updated and greatly expanded to include 32 readings and 43 innovative teaching activities to help students understand the complexities of population pressures, climate change, natural resource use, wildlife endangerment, distribution of wealth and food, urbanization, public health, gender equity, economic progress, and how these issues are interrelated.

The 2009 Will Steger Foundation Summer Institute for Climate Change Education will focus on the international climate negotiations in Copenhagen and unveil a brand new curriculum on international climate solutions for grades 9-12. The Climate Science Literacy Guide (http://climateliteracynow.org) serves as a framework for understanding and communicating about climate science. Points in the guide can serve as discussion starters or launching points for scientific inquiry. The Canary Project is an organization that uses visual art to communicate the impact of climate change. The organization started in 2006 photographing landscapes that are greatly effected by climate change and have since expanded the project to include other artists and media.

Facing the Future is offering Climate Change: Connections and Solutions, a set of two-week interdisciplinary curriculum units for students in grades 6-8 and grades 9-12, in pdf format. Aligned with national science and social studies standards, the lessons begin by building a foundation of understanding climate change and ends with students being able to communicate complex and interconnected issues related to climate change.

The Center for American Progress has just created a new interactive map on the human toll of climate change. This map provides scientific information on a variety of climate change threats, compiled from multiple sources, and plots this information geographically to show areas of concern. Contributions of scientific research to the database are invited. Just click on "Add a Point" and follow the directions provided.

Climate Change From Pole to Pole: Biology Investigations offers case studies and background information on how to teach the science of climate change. The six researched and field-tested activities building on four content chapters, provide students the opportunity to solve real-life scientific problems using guiding questions, graphs and data tables, short reading assignments, and independent research.

From the Will Steger Foundation’s Global Warming 101 initiative, Arctic Community Curriculum focuses on community, solutions, and positive messages of hope and action in response to the challenge of climate change. Based on the idea that we are all members of the community of Planet Earth, the curriculum looks in detail at a specific area, namely the Arctic, to help us appreciate the meaning of community. This new Web site from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is devoted to educating the public about Earth's changing climate, providing easy-to-understand information about climate change and how NASA studies it. Some features include a continuous snapshot of the condition of Earth's ice sheets, global average temperatures, sea level change, and concentrations of greenhouse gases.

The EcoResearch Media Watch on Climate Change provides a continuous update of media coverage from 150 news media sites on climate change and related issues. This October 3, 2007, Edutopia article "Truth and Consequences: Teaching Global Warming Doesn't Have to Spell 'Fear'," by Kevin Sweeney, discusses approaches to take when teaching children about global warming. Sweeney was to speak to a fifth-grade classroom about climate change and heard concern raised by other parents over instilling fear in these students. Sweeney received advice from friends to "focus less on the details and more on a framework." Read the article for practical advice.
