Kingston Elementary has a 26 acre living classroom. It includes a pioneer homestead, one room school house, Indian teepee, fish pond, wildlife preserve (deer, wild turkeys, etc.), butterfly garden, etc. There is also an extensive recycling project on-going at the school.

The National Wildlife Federation's Schoolyard Habitats Program is a national certification program which supports schools in the creation, restoration, and use of wildlife habitat as a teaching tool. Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper, and National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine outdoor classroom grant program to help schools improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the traditional classroom. Grants up to $2,000 will be awarded to at least 100 schools and grants for up to $20,000 may be awarded to schools or school districts with major outdoor classroom projects. Proposals are reviewed three times a year.

By collecting several fifteen cubic centimeter samples of soil in different areas in the schoolyard students can get a fairly accurate account of the variety and number of underground critters living in the entire area. They can also study the collection sites to determine natural and human-induced factors that might produce high or low concentrations of different underground critters.
