Graduate & Professional Course: Conservation Conflict Resolution ~ Virginia    
January 10-21, 2011 ~ Front Royal, Virginia

Conservation Conflict Resolution, an intensive 10-day experiential training course, is for anyone addressing conservation conflicts, whether these are conflicts between people and wildlife or between people about wildlife or other natural resources. This graduate/ professional course, offered by the Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Studies Programs, is hosted at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. Employing principles developed by HWCC—the Human Wildlife Conflict Collaboration—a leading organization in conflict resolution training, this course teaches participants strategies and processes for effectively addressing conservation related conflict, including: the role of neutrality in conflict prevention and reconciliation; effective conflict resolving communication techniques; and how to apply conflict analysis and process models to develop real-life conflict resolution plans. Fundamentals of Environmental Education

A 12-week online course about the fundamentals of environmental education is appropriate for both classroom teachers and for non-formal educators who work with students and/or teachers. Participants may obtain three undergraduate or graduate credits from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. All students, regardless of location, are eligible for the in-state tuition rate. The course is also offered at a reduced cost for those who are not interested in obtaining college credit.



Making EE Relevant for Culturally Diverse Audiences

September 13 - December 3, 2010

Deadline: August 13, 2010


This 12-week online course is designed to provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills needed to make EE relevant to culturally diverse audiences. Participants will broaden their perspective of EE to encompass interests and issues of concern to culturally diverse audiences, assess barriers to participation among these audiences, and apply cultural competency skills in building relationships and partnerships with members of an audience they intend to work with in the future. Although there are no prerequisites for this course, a working understanding of environmental education is essential for success in this course. Participants may obtain three undergraduate or graduate credits from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. It is also available as a non-credit workshop. All participants, regardless of location, are eligible for the in-state tuition rate.



Applied Environmental Education Program Evaluation

September 13 - December 10, 2010

Deadline: August 13, 2010


This 13-week online course is designed to assist environmental educators and natural resource professionals in evaluating their education programs. Participants have the opportunity to develop and apply skills in designing evaluation tools such as surveys, observation forms, and interview and focus group guides. This course was developed as a cooperative effort between the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) National Conservation Training Center. Participants may obtain three undergraduate or graduate credits from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. All participants, regardless of location, are eligible for the in-state tuition rate. The course is also offered as a non-credit workshop for those who are not seeking college credit.



Leadership Development in Natural Resources: Strategic Planning and Implementation

September 20 - November 19, 2010

Deadline: August 13, 2010


Learn how to develop successful strategic planning and implementation models, processes and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on managing the strategic planning process to build the capacity of organizations to provide effective environmental education programs. Course participants will also have an opportunity for individual consultation time with the course instructor to discuss specific issues/questions they might have regarding strategic planning. This course has been designed for environmental educators, natural resource professionals and graduate students who are currently involved in a strategic planning process or may become involved in one in the future. This is a nine-week course available for two graduate level credits through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. It is also available as a non-credit workshop.

Graduate and Professional Course ~ Virginia

The Smithsonian-Mason Global Conservation Studies Program, “Species Monitoring and Conservation: Terrestrial Mammals,” teaches current techniques in the assessment and monitoring of wild mammal populations including bats and terrestrial species of all sizes. During the 12-day intensive residential session, which is designed for graduate students and professionals in wildlife management and conservation, participants will learn the principles of study design, carry out field assessments on the 3200-acre campus, and use the latest techniques to analyze these collected data.

Edgewood College, Madison, Wisconsin, announces its Sustainability Leadership graduate certificate program to prepare leaders in applying principles of ecological and cultural sustainability. This is a project-based program designed for working professionals, including K-12 teachers and administrators. Chesapeake Classrooms    
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation invites you to be a part of a high-quality teacher professional development program - Chesapeake Classrooms. Get your feet wet paddling, hiking, fishing, sampling water quality, and visiting people and places that connect your school and community with the Chesapeake Bay. The five-day courses include studies about human impact on our rivers and the Chesapeake Bay watershed as a whole. Participants will do hands-on activities and can take home an array of interdisciplinary activities and lessons that can be incorporated into the school curriculum. Montana State University Online Course    
February 1 - April 23, 2010 ~ Online

This course is designed for educators to learn and practice basic ecological field study techniques and integrate them into their environmental, science, or ecology instruction. From February to April, this course focuses on winter field studies including aquatic, snow, forest, mammal, and bird studies. A number of indoor lab-based studies are also included for those times when it is impossible to get outside. A wide variety of field study techniques will be presented and the participants will share the results of the environmental studies online. Basic ecological concepts will be presented in the context of the field studies. Educators will have opportunities to share their views on a variety of topics related to the environment and education. The course will allow the participants to learn more about various ecological regions and approaches to teaching in nature.

Earth Expeditions Graduate Field Courses & Global Field Master's Program ~ Tuition Pai

Miami University’s Project Dragonfly, honored in 2008 with the NAAEE award for “Outstanding Service to Environmental Education” at the global level, is accepting applications for its 2010 Earth Expeditions graduate field courses and the Global Field Master’s Program (GFP). The courses and the GFP combine summer field courses in Africa, Asia, and the Americas with Web learning communities and bring together graduate students, scientists, educators, and community leaders at critical conservation field sites worldwide for firsthand experience with inquiry-driven education, environmental stewardship, and global understanding.



Each accepted applicant is awarded a tuition scholarship covering 2010 field course tuition, equivalent to $3,100 (Ohio residents) and $7,100 (non-Ohio residents). This tuition reduction applies to all applicants, regardless of residency or nationality. Award recipients are responsible for travel and field costs.



Earth Expeditions courses and the GFP Master’s may be completed part-time from anywhere in the US or abroad, and are open to educators and other professionals from all settings and disciplines.

UM Launches Online Wilderness Management Graduate Certificate    
The University of Montana is now offering a Graduate Certificate in Wilderness Management. The certificate provides students and professionals with training and expertise in the key topics related to wilderness management. Four online courses cover the history and philosophy of the wilderness system, wilderness law and policy, wilderness recreation management, wilderness ecosystem conservation and resource monitoring, and wilderness planning.
