The US EPA, along with the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Generations United, and the Rachel Carson Council, Inc., are sponsoring the 3rd Annual Rachel Carson intergenerational "Sense of Wonder" contest. Entries must involve an intergenerational team and describe how this project brought the team in touch with the natural world. This approach reflects Carson's desire to have adults share nature and discovery with children. Submissions are accepted in the categories of photography, essay, poetry, and dance. "What would you ask one million people to do that would change the world?" This project from the UK asks young people that question under the premise that "small actions x lots of people = BIG CHANGE." The "We Are What We Do" competition challenges young people to enter -- not to win things, but rather to change things.

Virtual Team Challenge is a “Virtual World” 3D simulation-based learning curriculum offered at no cost to high school teachers and students for Fall 2009. The program meets National Standards for Environmental Science and Business Education and is supported by lesson plans that incorporate the game's missions. 10,000 students participated last year, collaborating to manage the clean-up of an Oil Spill in the New City and win prizes for themselves, their schools, and the United Way.

The Learning & Leadership Grants provide opportunities for educators to engage in high-quality professional development. The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups engaged in collegial study. The Student Achievement Grants provide grants of $5,000 to help students improve academic achievement by engaging in critical thinking and problem solving that deepen knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The National Gardening Association Healthy Sprouts Awards Program encourages the growth of health-focused youth garden programs. Sponsored by Gardener's Supply Company, the awards support school and youth garden programs that teach about nutrition and the issue of hunger in the United States. The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes seeks nominations for its 2009 awards. The Barron Prize honors young people (ages 8-18) who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. NSTA, the Siemens Foundation, and Discovery Communications are launching a new sustainability education competition for middle school students to develop innovative green solutions for their schools, homes, and communities. The Captain Planet Foundation is accepting applications for funding projects that help students better grasp environmental issues. River of Words conducts a free international poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of watersheds and the environment. The contest helps youth explore the surroundings in which they live, and to express what they discover through poetry and art. It is held annually in affiliation with the Library of Congress Center for the Book. The grand prize and international winners receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC, to attend the awards ceremony at the Library of Congress. Environmental Concern is kicking off their fifth annual Write On! Wetlands Challenge. Part one, open to all students in grades 6-8, challenges the students to write a children’s book with a wetlands theme. The American Museum of Natural History's Young Naturalist Awards program is a science-based competition inviting students (grades 7-12) to plan and conduct their own scientific investigations. The project will include questions, hypotheses, and trips into the field to gather data. KIND Children's Book Award honors an outstanding children's book with a humane focus on animals or the environment. In collaboration with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Volvo Adventure Award rewards young people creating their own environmental projects. There are two competitions for the 2009 awards. The Adventure Award is for youth, ages 13-16, working in groups of two to five, that are actively involved in devising and managing the project. Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper, and National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine outdoor classroom grant program to help schools improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the traditional classroom. Grants up to $2,000 will be awarded to at least 100 schools and grants for up to $20,000 may be awarded to schools or school districts with major outdoor classroom projects.
