Students in grades K-8 can help raise awareness about sun safety and win prizes by entering the contest, sponsored by the SHADE Foundation of America, WeatherBug Schools, and the U.S. EPA. In collaboration with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Volvo Adventure Award rewards young people creating their own environmental projects. There are two competitions for the 2011 awards. The Adventure Award is for youth, ages 13-16, working in groups of two to five, that are actively involved in devising and managing the project. The second competition is the Great Big Bob the Bunny Cartoon contest for youth under the age of 13 working in teams of three. This competition challenges students in grades 9–12 to apply classroom lessons to real-life technical problems. In support of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the 2010-2011 challenge asks student teams to develop solutions focusing on fuel efficiency in aviation. Design Squad, a PBS KIDS GO! television series, is launching the nationwide 2010 Trash to Treasure competition -- challenging kids ages 5–19 from across the U.S. to recycle, reuse, and re-engineer everyday materials into new inventions. Youngsters around the country will celebrate Endangered Species Day 2010 by entering the Endangered Species Art contest. The contest is part of the fifth annual national Endangered Species Day, celebrated on and around May 21, 2010, and is organized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Endangered Species Coalition, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art/ University of New Orleans. The United Nations Environment Programme's International Children's Painting Competition invites young people (ages 6-14) to submit their paintings on the theme to the relevant UNEP Regional Office. This year's theme is "Biodiversity: Connecting with Nature." The competition encourages children from all parts of the world to focus on particular environmental issues and how these issues affect their communities. Mangrove Action Project (MAP) invites artwork from children (ages 6-14) from “mangrove nations” telling us "why mangroves are important to you and your community". Virtual Team Challenge is a “Virtual World” 3D simulation-based learning curriculum offered at no cost to high school teachers and students for Fall 2009. The program meets National Standards for Environmental Science and Business Education and is supported by lesson plans that incorporate the game's missions. 10,000 students participated last year, collaborating to manage the clean-up of an Oil Spill in the New City and win prizes for themselves, their schools, and the United Way.
