We Are What We Do    
"What would you ask one million people to do that would change the world?" This project from the UK asks young people that question under the premise that "small actions x lots of people = BIG CHANGE." The "We Are What We Do" competition challenges young people to enter -- not to win things, but rather to change things.

SunWise with SHADE Poster Contest    
Deadline: April 1, 2011

Students in grades K-8 can help raise awareness about sun safety and win prizes by entering the contest, sponsored by the SHADE Foundation of America, WeatherBug Schools, and the U.S. EPA. The national winner in the 4th-8th grade category will receive a family trip to Disney World and a WeatherBug Tracking Station for his/her school. Hand-drawn entries should be original and creative. Contest opens October 1st.

Three National Contests for Earth Science Week    
The American Geological Institute (AGI) is sponsoring three national contests in conjunction with Earth Science Week 2010, celebrating the theme of "Exploring Energy," October 10-16, 2010.



· Photography Contest, "We Depend on Energy" - Entrants should submit images that capture the way energy is used in their communities.



· Visual Arts Contest, "Energy on Earth" - Students in grades K-5 should submit two-dimensional original pieces of art illustrating, in creative and engaging ways, where energy comes from and how it is used.



· Essay Contest, "How Energy Powers the Planet," - Students in grades 6-9 should submit one-page essays focusing on how Earth system processes develop energy resources, how human use of energy affects the Earth system, and how people can be responsible stewards of Earth's energy resources.

Volvo Adventure Competition    
Deadline: January 31, 2011

In collaboration with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Volvo Adventure Award rewards young people creating their own environmental projects. There are two competitions for the 2011 awards. The Adventure Award is for youth, ages 13-16, working in groups of two to five, that are actively involved in devising and managing the project. The second competition is the Great Big Bob the Bunny Cartoon contest for youth under the age of 13 working in teams of three. Winning teams receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the final competition in Sweden in 2011 to represent their country.

Real World Design Challenge    
This competition challenges students in grades 9–12 to apply classroom lessons to real-life technical problems. In support of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), the 2010-2011 challenge asks student teams to develop solutions focusing on fuel efficiency in aviation. Student teams compete on a state level, and winning state teams will advance to compete nationally.

Art Contest for Kids

Save the Redwoods League is now accepting redwood art contest submissions from U.S. students in three age categories: ages 5-9, 10-13, and 14-18 to create a postcard illustrating what inspires them most about redwood forests, with a short note on the back side of the card to President Obama about why he should care about redwoods.

EE Week's Annual Photo Blog Contest

Trash to Treasure Competition

Design Squad, a PBS KIDS GO! television series, is launching the nationwide 2010 Trash to Treasure competition -- challenging kids ages 5–19 from across the U.S. to recycle, reuse, and re-engineer everyday materials into new inventions. Inventions should move things or people, protect the environment, or be used for indoor or outdoor play. Finalists will be featured on the Design Squad Web site and three grand-prize winners will go to Boston to see their designs built and appear on the program and its Web site.

Nominate a Young Environmental Hero for a $2500 Barron Prize

The Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes honors young people (ages 8-18) who have made a significant positive difference to people and our planet. National Kids’ Art Contest Highlights Importance of Endangered Species

Youngsters around the country will celebrate Endangered Species Day 2010 by entering the Endangered Species Art contest. The contest is part of the fifth annual national Endangered Species Day, celebrated on and around May 21, 2010, and is organized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Endangered Species Coalition, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art/ University of New Orleans. Artwork should highlight one or more endangered species—mammal, bird, reptile, amphibian, fish, plant, and/or invertebrate (insect, spider, snail, coral, crustacean or clam)—found in the United States. First Live Deliberately Essay Contest

This first annual essay contest from the Thoreau Institute of the Walden Woods Project asks students to respond to Thoreau’s famous call to “live deliberately.” In 500 words or fewer, students are prompted to consider what their own deliberate lives look and feel like. International Children's Painting Competition    
Deadline: April 15, 2010

The United Nations Environment Programme's International Children's Painting Competition invites young people (ages 6-14) to submit their paintings on the theme to the relevant UNEP Regional Office. This year's theme is "Biodiversity: Connecting with Nature." The competition encourages children from all parts of the world to focus on particular environmental issues and how these issues affect their communities. Regional winners will be announced on World Environment Day, June 5, 2010. The regional first prize winners each will receive a cash prize and a trip for themselves and an accompanying adult to the Tunza International Children’s Conference in Aichi, Japan, August 2010.

Siemens We Can Change the World Competition

NSTA, the Siemens Foundation, and Discovery Communications partner to conduct this sustainability education competition for students to develop innovative green solutions for their schools, homes, and communities. This competition will involve a team of students identifying, researching, and recommending a solution to an environmental problem in their community.

2010 Brower Youth Awards

The Brower Youth Awards has launched the 2010 prize search for outstanding grassroots environmental leaders across North America to celebrate eco-activists, ages 13-22, leading the way to a green, just future. Six Brower Youth Award recipients will receive a $3,000 cash prize, an all-expenses paid trip to San Francisco to speak at an inspirational award ceremony, and media coverage.

Living on the Ocean Planet Video Competition

The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB®) second annual “Living on the Ocean Planet” video competition is being hosted in partnership with the Census of Marine Life (CoML), the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA), and the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL). The goal is to showcase student-developed original videos that educate the general public about marine technology and address the Essential Ocean Literacy Principles. Green Thumb Challenge

From classroom bean plant experiments to outdoor compost projects, pots of pansies to large raised beds, the Green Thumb Challenge aims to motivate schools across the country to plant 10,000 indoor or outdoor gardens in 2010. The Green Education Foundation (GEF) Web site provides all of the informational resources needed to start and maintain a garden of any size, and includes standards-based lessons that link gardening to science, math, language arts, creative arts, and technology. Register by December 15, 2009, to be entered into a raffle for free garden kits and cash prizes to jump start your school or youth garden. Mangrove Action Project Announces Art Contest for Children and Release of Calendar

Mangrove Action Project (MAP) invites artwork from children (ages 6-14) from “mangrove nations” telling us "why mangroves are important to you and your community". Artwork will be published in MAP’s 2011 calendar distributed internationally to raise awareness about mangrove forest wetlands. This contest aims to promote and listen to creative voices of children living in mangrove areas.



Mangrove Action Project’s 9th edition of its Children's Mangrove Art Calendar for 2010 is ready for distribution. Through this calendar and associated international art competition for children, MAP hopes to instill in future generations deeper ecological principles to restore and conserve the health of our planet's coastal ecosystems, utilizing mangroves as a sort of "flagship" to guide us there! Coleopterists Society's Youth Incentive Award

This international organization of professionals and hobbyists interested in the study of beetles has a program to recognize young people (grades 7–12) studying beetles. The society provides $150 grants and credit toward equipment from BioQuip Products, along with a one-year subscription to the society's journal, The Coleopterists Bulletin. Virtual Team Challenge    
Virtual Team Challenge is a “Virtual World” 3D simulation-based learning curriculum offered at no cost to high school teachers and students for Fall 2009. The program meets National Standards for Environmental Science and Business Education and is supported by lesson plans that incorporate the game's missions. 10,000 students participated last year, collaborating to manage the clean-up of an Oil Spill in the New City and win prizes for themselves, their schools, and the United Way.

The Captain Planet Foundation is accepting applications for funding projects that help students better grasp environmental issues. River of Words conducts a free international poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of watersheds and the environment. Elks National Foundation: Most Valuable Student Scholarship

Students' Igniting Creative Energy Competition

Young Naturalist Awards

The American Museum of Natural History's Young Naturalist Awards program is a science-based competition inviting students (grades 7-12) to plan and conduct their own scientific investigations. The project will include questions, hypotheses, and trips into the field to gather data. Students will then write about their investigations in essays that include artwork and/or photographs that help illustrate their findings. Humane Society Youth Award Programs      
Each year, Humane Society Youth acknowledges excellence and achievement in several areas of humane education with the following award programs:



KIND Kid Award recognizes children in grades K-6 who have made a positive difference for animals.

National KIND Teacher Award recognizes a Pre-K-12 teacher who effectively incorporates humane and environmental education into his or her curriculum.

KIND Children's Book Award honors an outstanding children's book with a humane focus on animals or the environment.

Humane Teen of the Year Award recognizes a teenager who has made a significant contribution to animal protection, such as direct work on behalf of animals, aiding in the passage of humane legislation, or educating others to be kind to animals.

Build an Outdoor Classroom at Your School Grants    
Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, International Paper, and National Geographic Explorer! classroom magazine outdoor classroom grant program to help schools improve their science curriculum by engaging students in hands-on experiences outside the traditional classroom. Grants up to $2,000 will be awarded to at least 100 schools and grants for up to $20,000 may be awarded to schools or school districts with major outdoor classroom projects.
