Each year, conference attendees ask for more things to do outdoors. That's why we offer so many field trips. In St. Paul, you can choose from 14 different options to explore the beautiful Land of 10,000 Lakes. Canoeing,
hiking, and caving are just some of the more rigorous opportunities, while people who want a more relaxed experience can choose from excursions to a zoo, an aquarium, a sustainable building center, or a historic fort. It happens at every conference, you're just starting to get excited about an issue or you're working in small groups to tease out a solution to a problem and - the session ends. If you want more time to explore environmental education topics in depth, you can choose from among 17 preconference workshops that begin on Tuesday evening, October 10, and run through Wednesday, October 11. Some workshops offer lunch, some will involve off-site activities, but all will give you an opportunity to spend a day or more exploring, discussing, dissecting, and enjoying a single subject. We don't have room to feature all the field trips and workshops, so go to NAAEE's Web site for details: http://www.naaee.org/conference/naaee-2006-conference-start/ and click on either Field Trips or Workshops for the complete list. Many of the Field Trip descriptions offer additional links to the site or company providing the field trip for more details. The URL is: http://www.naaee.org/conference

Congress passed an “Omnibus Appropriations” Bill last week for the second half of FY 2009 that largely continued the level-funding of environmental education programs for the rest of the year. But there were a couple of surprises totaling about $15 million in new funds for the field. There's a detailed breakdown by department and an analysis posted on the Web site of our close friends at the Campaign for Environmental Literacy www.fundEE.org.
The Advocacy Committee is already working on the FY 2010 Federal budget, specifically increased funding for programs under the National Environmental Education Act like the EPA Office of Environmental Education and its critical grant program, and the National Environmental Education Foundation. We are also working on the important first year funding for the new University Sustainability Program. Watch EE-News for information on how you can help pass these important appropriations and the reintroduction of the "No Child Left Inside" bill. We will need the support from every NAAEE member to get these passed. Thanks! The URL is:

NAAEE needs your input! NAAEE is an organizational member of NCATE (www.ncate.org) and is in the process of writing Program Standards for the Initial Preparation of Environmental Educators for NCATE. The writing team has developed draft standards and rubrics. Now, the writing team needs to hear from you! This draft is posted on the NAAEE Web site at http://naaee.org/pages/projects/inv_to_participate.html
Please take the time to review the document and submit your comments by May 22, 2006. Currently, NCATE has approved program standards for 20 different disciplines (e.g., elementary education, science education, social studies education). In many states, the NCATE/state partnership agreement requires colleges and universities to address the NCATE program standards as part of the accreditation review process. Consequently, the development of NCATE Environmental Education Program Standards is an important effort for the environmental education community. These standards, when fully development and approved, will impact environmental education in schools across the country. For additional information about the project, please contact Bora Simmons (boras@niu.edu). The URL is: http://naaee.org/pages/projects/inv_to_participate...

We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of our dear friend and colleague, Barb Pitman. Barb’s passion for excellence in environmental education touched the lives of all who had the great fortune to know and work with her. She will be sorely missed for her warmth, compassion, and good humor, and for her dedication to the environmental causes about which she cared so deeply.
At the request of Barb’s family, Project Learning Tree has established a Memorial & Legacy Fund to honor her loving memory and to celebrate her decades-long commitment to environmental education. The URL is: http://www.plt.org/cms/pages/35_195_9.html

We share the belief that among the first steps to achieving environmental literacy, and ultimately to environmental protection or sustainability, is to develop programs and materials that are of the highest quality possible. During a June 6 training in Washington, DC it was extremely encouraging to find that nearly a dozen members of national EE organizations agree that the EE Resource Reviews can play an instrumental role in ensuring that "quality" is regarded in a consistent way. Attendees came from government agencies, an industry trade association, and the National Farm Bureau. Led by Ali Goulstone Sweeney of Colorado, the training included how to submit resources into the review system, as well as a refresher session on the Guidelines for Excellence in EE.
Please remember that the EE Resource Reviews is not limited to curriculum guides or lesson plans. This program accepts almost all kinds of EE resources so long as there is a documented outline on how the resources are intended to be used in an educational setting. These include simple resources such as stand-alone tours or hikes, interpretive programs, and presentations, or more complex ones like case studies, action research, and models for project-based learning or service learning. This is a great time to submit your late summer or fall programs for review. Get on the fast track to excellence at our two-part workshop on August 2, from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm in Norfolk, VA. At this years' conference we will be working with local community members who are working to reclaim the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary, opened to the public in 2005. In view of the St. Paul skyline, this sanctuary was a former rail yard, with dramatic bluffs, caves, and underground springs. Help transform this abandoned post-industrial dumping site into an oasis of nature in the city!
Participants will get copies of the Dunn Foundation’s ViewFinders Too teacher's guide, and materials from Earth Force and Eco-Education and will also be eligible to apply to the Dunn Foundation for mini-grants to design and implement community service learning projects with students. A grant from the Dunn Foundation partially funds this project. The URL is: http://www.naaee.org/conference/bruce-vento-nature...

Hyatt Regency Wichita (HRW) is continuing to increase their "green" efforts and is constantly creating new ways to cut down waste and conserve energy. Recently, HRW added a cardboard baler to cut trash removal by one-third. New showerheads have restricted flow to reduce water usage. Additionally, each department has an energy management plan to identify areas where users can help save energy. HRW will continue to focus on environmental savings as staff prepares for NAAEE’s arrival.

During 2006 and early 2007, representatives from over two dozen federal agencies, professional associations, and not-for-profit organizations came together to discuss the definitions of common terminology used by interpreters, environmental educators, historians, and others in settings such as parks, aquariums, zoos, nature centers, historic sites, and museums. NAAEE was involved with this effort, represented by Board member Richard Jurin and staff member Sue Bumpous.
The result can be found at www.definitionsproject.com. The information is copyright-free for download or web-based use by anyone who needs it. You also may provide a direct link to this site from your organization's site. This is a dynamic project – visitors are encouraged to provide feedback and comments and to suggest new words or examples that will be reviewed for possible addition to the site. Numerous other collection points have been set up where Airport tenants can participate. During NAAEE’s conference, the City of Wichita has arranged recycling at the Century II Convention Center. Although this effort is not yet a city-wide mandate, city staff feels confident that in the very near future Wichita will be recycling and have applauded our efforts in helping the city to move in this direction.
Local farmers have been working closely with the Hyatt’s chef -- the menus they have planned are looking fabulous: Janzen Farm lamb and organic flour, vegetables and fruits from Bolte Farms and Corr and Stimatze Farm, breads by Bontrager Pastries and Perez Breads, and Lloyd’s local honey; just to name a few! Exploration Place (location for the Stapp Scholarship Auction Dinner) is contacting local food vendors and plans to adopt more local sources for meal choices after the NAAEE conference ends. They’ve thanked NAAEE for calling their attention to the benefits of “buy fresh, buy local” practices. Consider offsetting your carbon emissions during the registration process; the Sustainability Committee worked hard to find a local offset provider for our event. It’s very easy to make your donation as part of your conference registration. Earth Force is bringing a team of high school students who will assess the ecological footprint of the conference. The students will identify environmental issues, root causes of problems and identify key "power centers" that can help them address the issues. This project is a demonstration of the ongoing partnership between Earth Force and Staples designed to engage young people as active environmental champions. Each year NAAEE works to minimize the effects of a large conference by practicing what we preach -- sustainability efforts. With each conference being held in different parts of the country, it is largely dependent on what the facility can provide. In August, the Virginia Beach Conference Center (VBCC) was designated as a participant in the Virginia Green Lodging program, a division of the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. VBCC is the first convention center to become certified in the state of Virginia. Learn more about how we will reduce, reuse, and recycle at the conference.

NAAEE Executive Director Brian Day offers the insight that eco-education does not have to be an issue of money, suggesting that environmental curriculum aligned with state and federal benchmarks such as the American Forest Foundation's Project Learning Tree (PLT) is a proven, yet inexpensive program. Western history is deeply intertwined with Wichita's early days and makes an intriguing context for the 2008 NAAEE Annual Conference. In fact, the Chisholm Trail ran through the exact location where the conference will be held! In the early years, tens of thousands of Texas longhorns bound for the railhead at Abilene forded the Arkansas River just south of the Douglas Avenue bridge and ambled down the new cattle town's main street before continuing on north.
Image: The Chisholm Trail marker is located on the west bank of the Arkansas River, right across from the location of the conference. For more about the NAAEE Annual Conference, visit: The URL is: http://www.naaee.org/conference
