The NAAEE has teamed up with QuantumShift.tv to launch the 'Be the Change, Share the Story! School Video Contest. The contest is challenging 5,000 teams of students at schools across the US and Canada to make a difference and tell the world. Teams pick a social or environmental project and create two short videos about their project. The first video tells how the team plans to make a difference, and the follow up video shows the team in action, making a difference! River of Words conducts a free international poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of watersheds and the environment. The contest helps youth explore the surroundings in which they live, and to express what they discover through poetry and art. It is held annually in affiliation with the Library of Congress Center for the book. NSTA, the Siemens Foundation, and Discovery Communications are launching a new sustainability education competition for middle school students to develop innovative green solutions for their schools, homes, and communities. This national middle school competition will involve a team of students identifying, researching, and recommending a solution to an environmental problem in their community. The Nestle Very Best in Youth Program honors young people (ages 13-18) who have excelled in school and who are making their community and the world a better place. Call for Illustrators (Grades K-6) Begins May 1, 2008 May is American Wetlands Month! Get your students involved and engaged with the 2008 Write On! Wetlands Challenge. Science, reading, and the arts collide in this annual competition that first asks middle schoolers to compose a children’s book about wetlands and then asks elementary students to illustrate the winning manuscript. The theme for 2008 is “Marshy Migrations: Journey’s of Lifetime.” Each year, animals of all kinds (not just birds!) depend on wetlands for food and protection as they prepare for and complete their seasonal migration routes. The 2007 Intel Schools of Distinction Program awards schools that exemplify the best of the best and serve as role models to other schools across the nation. The Dow Chemical Company has made available $20 million in grant funds to support proposed initiatives concentrating on math and science, teacher training and parental involvement for K-12 school districts. Grant proposals should focus on giving K-12 students science and engineering experiences, giving teachers the training to provide these experiences and fostering parental and community involvement. School districts and school boards nationwide, as well as programs that promote systemic education reform in math and science, are eligible to apply. Special attention is given to school districts around communities where Dow is located.
