Guidelines for

the Initial Preparation of

Environmental Educators

As part of the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education, we have developed a set of recommended guidelines for the pre-service preparation of environmental educators. We know that the pre-service preparation of professionals is essential to the delivery quality environmental education programs.

As with our previous projects, we have involved a wide variety of individuals and organizations in a process of review and comment. Over 1,000 individuals and organizations have provided their comments thus far. We want these guidelines to
be clear, appropriate, useful, and reflective of the best practice in environmental education as a field.

What follows is an overview of these guidelines. A full version of this document, including indicators and references is available through the order publications link.
