Gauge. I've never seen a car with an idiot light for an overheat condition
yet. Some of the GM diesels will actually beep at you and shut the engine
down 30 seconds later if they detect an overheat condition.

That's not really what I meant :)
The check engine light serves as the interrupt routine for the driver.
The EEC should take only changing a variable that controls at which point
the ECT is considered to be "out of range" and the check engine light
comes on.
